      • 740 - 760 : Moved troops and the like...not much happened

800 : Ghandi requested we break off trade with the French. We agreed. Then, Catherine closed her boarders with us and further degraded us with a slap to our face! I think I know who our next target is.

        • Just in case you were wondering...

820 : Continued build up on the boarder. I am currently organizing our troops in to 4 groups. Each group has 4 Pretorians and a Catapult. I think that these groups should work well together.

one more turn then I give up the reigns...

              • Huh! I am just wondering what happened to move us from a stable economy to -3 per turn. If you (Cado) changed some settings, no problem, but I noticed as I was waiting for our new palace some fluctuation in the deficit with me making no changes that shoud have caused them that I am aware of.

I am just trying to understand what goes into determining the cost of running an empire from turn to turn as a learning exercise.

                    • Like a stone which gently begins it's rolling descent from the top of a hill, it all seemed so trivial at first when Napoleon flatly refused to even speak to us...

But thus began a heated discussion throughout the Roman empire. The Roman generals demanded retribution through war- how dare the weak French insult our superior culture and military?

And so that stone began to tumble faster and more violently

The Senate was flatly opposed to a war at first- they feared a war would sap power from them and go to the generals. But promises were made, promises of rich estates such as vinyards near Rheims, extravagant villas in the fertile land north of Paris, and weekend getaways on the warm beaches of Marseilles. Coupled with the financial crisis which drove the people to question the Senate's cometence, they soon had no choice...

That stone was now tumbling out of control...

                      War was declared!

                      • The generals revealed a plan they have have working on for years now... The invasion would comprise of two army groups.

Army Group I would be comprised of 7 Praetorian and 2 catapult. They would advance directly towards Paris which has a surprisingly weak garrison- 3 Archers and an Axeman. General Minimus Mercius would command Army Group I.

Army Group II consisting of 6 Praetorian and 2 catapult would assault Marseilles, which is much better defended than Paris. It is situated on a hill and intelligence reports indicate 1 Swordsman, 1 Axeman, 1 Spearman and 1 Archer make up the garrison. General Maximus Miserius would lead Group II.

After taking their first objectives both groups would send a large force towards Rheims, which is covered by 2 archers and a spearmen. Desite the small force the city too is on hills and has walls rotecting it.

Tours, with it's low population and negligible garrison will be left for last.

                        • 860AD - Army Group II begins it's bombardment of Marseilles, and find that the city is actually only protected by an Archer and Spearman. This troubles General Maximus Miserius because he knows not to doubt Roman intelligence. Then word comes in from some fisherman- a French invasion force was spotted on the sea with swordsman and axemen... those sneaky French!

                          • The General then decided to hasten the assault on Marseilles, he ordered his troops to charge!

One wave of Praetorian attack and manage to overcome the Archers, while a second wave attacking the spearmen get fooled by a classic pincer defense and die. The third wave however easily dispatches the remaining injured spearmen. The city is now ours!

Meanwhile on the northern front Army Group I advance towards Paris and have captured the French's strategic Iron source, which was protected by Swordsmen. Casualties were not bad, the legion will need time to heal though.

                            • 880 AD - Feudalism is researched just in time. The French land their forces outside Neopolis, giving me opportunity to upgrade the Archers to Longbowman. Army Group II begins send a few Praetorian back to help defend the French invasion.

We begin researching Priesthood- 1 turn and allows temples, some of our people are angry!

Meanwhile the rest of Army Group II begin to regroup and heal up, preparing to move on to Rheims.

Army Group I reaches the hills outside Paris, preparing for bombardment, while a few Praetorian secure that iron source. General Minimus Mercius notices that Paris has just completed a new Horse Archer unit

                              • 900 AD - Horrible news!

The Praetorian were not able to reach Neopolis in time...

The vile French have managed to defeat the defenses of Neopolis and have burnt it to the ground!!!

There will be absolutely no mercy to such a barbaric act. Complete destruction of the French is the only option!

Meanwhile our forces have begun to wittle down Paris' defenses and Army Group II have reached Rheims.

Paris finished a Granary and is now building a settler
