all empires eventually crumble - but only because they usually treated their people and their colonies like crap.
the people of my english empire in every city however enjoy work (forges, banks), culture (libraries, universities, theatres), have great health, lots of luxuries and ... something that is topic #1 in the US since 2001: safety (courthouses and a massive army of redcoats, cavalry and even frigates).

and with the newest world wonder addition, the statue of liberty in the lake of the capital, people on the continent even voluntarily work extra shifts because they are so happy

while it is quite biased (and sounds bitter), there is a lot of truth. especially our right wing conservatives had huge problems admitting that switzerland did a lot of bad things by passively standing by. and the left wing idealists criticise that CH should have stood up more.

the text however correctly writes that there was no real choice. several 100'000 jews, non-caucasian, crippled and other followed ethnicities were let in during the pre-war years (1933-1939). it was only when the war started and german soldiers regularly violated borders to kill "jewish collaborators" that it was reduced. this is still a thorn in the hearts of many nationals...

as a non-native i have no problems speaking about this. the only thing that bothers me is that those nations who criticised the swiss actions the most, were mostly much worse with their actions (or non-actions), especially the USA that joined in the world war three years too late and only because the japanese attacked the and the french and belgians who offered little to no resistance and were captured in a matter of weeks.

Since you describe yourself as a non-native, do you identify with any particular nationality out of interest? Or are you more of a "citizen of the world" type?

my dad is south slavic and i don't have a big connection with them, also because quite a few refugees and immigrants from the various yugoslavic countries made the whole balkan people look bad. my mom is english and in some places i do feel more english than swiss...
but as i grew up here my swiss influence is by far the biggest. just not big enough to have any nationalistic or patriotic feelings.

so no, i don't really identify myself fully with any one nationality... so "citizen of the world" (or at least europe) is more appropriate for me
