It's kind of a cross between real-time multiplayer and PBEM. The PitBoss server runs continuously on the host's computer. Once a new turn starts, players can log in at any time to play. There's a turn timer, usually 12 or 24 hours, so you're garanteed to be able to play a new turn after 12/24 hours at the latest, and no one can hold up the game. Also you never have to e-mail turns since it's server-managed, and no one can cheat by reloading their moves.
PitBoss is most fun when all players can get online at the same time for a real-time session. Then the turns can go by very fast. Playing a few evenings a week, Hak and I and a few others completed a PitBoss game from 4000 BC to 2050 AD in about 6 weeks, and we're up to 1720 AD in the second one.
To play a game, all you need is someone who can host the PitBoss server. Sometimes a new game is posted in the forum, but since regular PitBoss sessions can tie up a few evenings a week, few players can play 2 of those at the same time so you don't see many new postings. Of course a pitboss game can be played as leisurely as you want, PBEM-style, if people don't gather online.-C.

I don't see any on this forum, but I see that someone is trying to set up a PitBoss game in Europe (he's in Finland I see), so you may want to check it out. It's over at CFC:
