I'm inclined to agree with DNK, but I'm curious to see some tests done on how fast we can get explorers out and how much ground they can cover in different scenarios.

I kind of agree with Mz, build the second city and then do the scouting. The sooner we get that second city planted the better off we'll be.

Mzprox is a master in exact timing > there is a timeslot which can be used for fishing, and mining will be there exactly on time.

I have a question. Why is going for fishing before mining more efficient? If we build our second city by the gold that would mean we wouldn't have a city on the coast until our third city, right? What am I missing which makes it better to take fishing before mining?

Ok happy about fishing after AH.

re the second city, warriors etc. What sort of timespan did that take in your testgame?

Actually from my testgame it seems the optimal techpath is: Hunting-AH-Fishing-Mining-Pottery

So fishing before mining and pottery. The reason: we will have mining by the time we need it (we will first work up the wheat and cow there to ensure that city will grow to pop5 so it can work on cottages too.) Fishing will allow us to use that lake next to our capital which at that time will increase our science output by 30%

One thing to discuss: We will build two warriors before we make a settler for that spot and I'm not sure that 2 is enough. We need one to protect our capitol then one to escort our settlers. However if there are rival warriors or barbarian bears around at that time one warrior might not be enough. also there will be a worker there who also need to be protected. So I think we should give up far-scouting with our first warrior and plan its movements so that it will arrive back there by the time we ready to build our city.
This second city will grow into a production powerhouse very fast (8 hammer/turn at pop 3 while still having +5 food to grow) so we can send away scouting parties then.

Totally agree. That's our city spot and mining should get priority.

Awesome city site! I agree that 1N of the gold is best. I also agree that we should go for mining. Yay

1N of gold - what's up with that? 4PH, 2 GH, PH city, gold, cow, wheat, 4 FPs, + 4 GP. Ridiculosity. We can always split some of those amazing tiles with a 3rd city for now since I doubt with our happy caps we're getting 10 pop+ for some time, but that site is crying for a monster late-game city using every tile. But the +10F for all the good tiles and city tile equals just what we need for 4 PH and 2GH. Nice.

24HPT without workshops for now, plus all that commerce in one site? Damn nice for early game. About 150-175HPT by the Industrial. The commerce is nice now, yeah, but we really need that production for such a game, and the food is going to be really useful in the earl-mid game for fast whips. Such a solid, solid site, and the 25% defense bonus is the cherry on top. Yeah, cottage up those FPs now (or for another site, whatever), but workshops/farms for later.

So, yeah, mining, and hook up the gold and that lake. While we're doing that, tech up to Pottery. Even that 1 gold isn't going to do much for our happy cap, though. Let's hope there's another one or two resources to the S or E, else we need to start considering an early Monarchy run soon, especially with all this food our caps are going to be hit quickly with each city.

I think the position of our first city (after the capital) can not be a question now, but I think even the tech path might need to be reworked. I think we might need mining before pottery.

I think the majority wanted to go on scouting so the warrior will go south to explore hat possible city site then goes SW. The second warrior will try explore east a bit around that cow then turn back to protect city. the third warrior will escort our settlers and till then will try to keep the land barbarian free.

So are we going to start moving the first warrior south and then east in a big arch or will we be using the second warrior to explore east and move the first one back towards our city? I would like to keep at least one warrior near the city just in case a barbarian pops up or we're surprised by someone else's wandering warrior.
