Want to try diplo-gaming

I want to try playing a diplo-game but always seem to miss the opportunity because the games have already started, and I don't want to start my own because I am not really confident that I will be good at it. So any suggestions on where i can join a diplo game, or where i can watch to see when a new one starts

Unfortunately I do not expect any new one to start anytime soon.
I can list you as a potential players for a new game, or as a potential sub, if you want.

It's ok I can wait . I have a question. How is the game played by everyone? PBEM? I looked at the FAQ but I only found things in there about civ 2.

We use Pitboss. Basically you login like any other Direct IP game, but you just play one turn. It has a turn timer, usually set to 12-24 hours, that you have to take your turn within. It goes much faster than PBEM. And yea, the FAQ is shamefully out of date.

1. So when u say it goes a lot faster do u mean multiple turns a day or an hour, what?
2. Are the in character forum posts every turn, or is it just when u have something interesting to talk about?

Oh just thought of something else the FAQ says warmongers are looked down upon and a lot about colonizing around the planet. Have there ever been any world war-like scenarios that u know of and is the colonization thing still relevant?

Nope. The Arabs are still controlled by France (DOE). Whatever happened to the Arabian player who was struggling with his civ setup?

That being said, I am having a good time playing builder with the arabs.

1. Like I said, the turn timer is set somewhere between 12 and 24 hours. So that controls how often the turns go by. Unlike PBEM, the turns are Simultaneous, and the turn will switch whether or not everyone takes their turn.
2. Just when you have something interesting to talk about. Those of us who are more creative (and have more time to kill) find more things to talk about than others, heh.

Lots of big, world wars. But generally not wars of annihilation. Wars of annihilation only really occur when a civ is abandoned by its previous player. Otherwise very big wars will happen, but gains made in the war are limited so as not to cripple the losing player. The goal is to keep everyone in the game and interested.

You should take over for the Arabs until the original player returns!

Maybe that FAQ is dated a bit.

We need a sub for Arabia, maybe a perm sub since Arabia hasn't been around for a long time.
Would you be interested? We're relatively early in the game.

Arabia founded Islam and is located in the Middle East. You're next to Israel, the Ottoman Empire and India.
You have been at war with Israel and India. Role playing opportunities enough!

What is the date ingame?

The ingame date is 580 AD. Though we usually advance quicker than the date implies, so the world is mostly in the middle ages right now (some ahead some behind). As for characters... there is a lot of variation and flexibility. At this stage of the game it is impossible to have truly accurate lifespans for characters since each turn is like 20 years, and it would be obnoxious to have a new ruler every turn or two. But personally I try to have decent turnover in my rulers and characters. Some people will go all game with just one ruler. It is a matter of preference.

But we get to vote for other people's stories and reward or punish based on our story preferences. So if someone has some unexplained immortal ruler I may dock them points. Others probably wouldn't care.

As for what the characters are based on, I think we are all going with a pseudo-historical approach. Germany is role-playing his civ as the Neandor, but no one is going for Megaman or Lord of the Rings or anything. So mostly historical would be good I think.
