I don't think reducing militarism should be the goal. The biggest problems we had in previous games was a lack of militarism. This game was actually a refreshing change from that and thus, I think a huge success. In the past we had few players who just built up and built up all game. No one attacked them and then just built themselves into unstoppable super powers. So these games became rather dull and pre-destined as no one wanted to try and topple the leader. In this game I was the leader, and the Axis toppled me! Bastards! But while personally discouraging, it was great for the game! They were certainly sore for losing the war, but damn, it was sure close. I promise you that everyone on our side was very worried about whether it'd be possible to win or not. I actually don't see the alliances as a huge problem in this game. There was malleability. Israel switched sides. Japan switched sides. Arabia (thanks to a player change) switched sides. Wow! Lot of flexibility there!
Sure, England-Ottomans-Russia vs. Vikings-Neandor-France remained the same, but we did kind of have guns at each other's head for the last half of the game. It is kind of hard for either side to just disarm and disband their alliance in the midst of that kind of danger. After losing all my homeland, and regaining it thanks to my allies, and continuing to worry about losing it once again, I'm not going to just stab them in the back.
But even with this, I think we had the most balanced, flexible and unpredictable game we've ever had. Two evenly matched sides, lots of war, big damage to the leader, war that stretched across the globe and affected many continents. Wow, it had absolutely everything you could want. The only reason our side won was because of some tactical brilliance and some good ol' fashioned bluffing. That's it. As we discussed earlier, if you guys didn't cave after England/Russia threatened to raze the Viking holy city, who knows what would have happened. You had machine guns, it could have gone really bad for us. I think the game was AMAZING! Thank you everyone for making such a fun game!
Not to pat myself on the back too much, but I think the map and the tiers played a huge part to making this game a success. I do wish people dropped out of the game less, but I think things still unfolded as planned. The better skilled players ended up in Europe and fought each other tooth & nail, whereas the more laid back players in the lower tiers had a more leisurely pace. Look at how the Natives were able to catch up with the world! Inca probably shouldn't have been tier 4, hah, but generally things worked out quite well. What a game!Last edited by OzzyKP; November 19, 2011, 10:53.Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012

First success here is that we have started to talk! Lately even the org thread was dying off. It is great to see that more are starting to post again and have interest in building a base for the new diplo game. Lets have someone start off a new ORG thread for this new diplo so we can move there. Ozzy any brilliant new names for the next game?
Yes the game was great i agree with the Priest it is hard to let go of something which you have invested for so long. Ozzy you alliance should be called the bluffers

Very good analysis, Ozzy. I can only say: Yeah - it is a GREAT game, it had everything. It had wars, it had colonialism, it had suppression, it had burning hate, it had lasting love, it had heroes and villains, it had martyrs and demons, it had betrayal and loyalty, breathtaking turnarounds, epic clashes, peaceful neighboring, helping hands and hands with daggers. It had everything.
Only 2 things that I can point as a weakness - big pauses (although everything stayed in the good tone and constructive) and the biggest issue in this game to my understanding - too much quitting and/or not dedicated/committed to the game players. For the next game to be successful, above all I hope the players to be fully committed.
For the DoE future, I guess people who are interested in continuing will just keep loging in and playing the game normally and posting stories, while those not interested, will stop playing and their sad deserted nations regrettably will be turned in to AI and left to the mercy of the other players.

So I will introduce myself now as your beloved/hated, Heroic/Villainous, loyal/feared, Glorious/Evil Ottomans AKA Turks (2nd Turks anyway, as The Priest was the first one). It was fun being the loyal pawn of Russia, sailing around the world kicking everyone's @ss. I tried to stay true to the Violent Warlike tone set by The Priest. And my goal was trying to be as disruptive, unpredictable, provocative and controversial as humanly possible. I feel I succeeded at that. As Priest alluded to way back, this is my first Diplomacy game and What a great fun game it was (at least for me it was)!
@ Inca - Really glad you like some of my suggestions, I have found that laying it on heavy with food resources really helps alot in pitboss. People are far less likely to quit when they have great starting locations with lots of resources.. I really, really, really love your increased ship movement Mod. I love it, love it love it, and I hope we keep it the same next game.. The only thing I would caution about is making TOO many changes, just because the results can be so unpredictable that they make people frustrated.
@ Ozzy (Post 3734) - Paragraph 1 Yes 100%, Paragraph 2 Yes 100%, Paragraph 3 Yes 100%, Paragraph 4 Yes! (tier system rocked) 100%, Last sentence Yes 90% (Japan???).
And I also agree 100% that I would rather play another Earth Map. I would like to play from 4000 BC though, just this time add a crapload of Seafood, Corn, Rice, Wheat, plus way more Deer, Pigs and Cows (There is enough Sheep already). This will also make the food Corporations a real monstrous population booster, and trading them around will be a great game dynamic.
@ Calanthian - Having a Revolution event is a great Idea to shake up the large Empires. Maybe even have it happen multiple times. I think there is a "Revolutions" Mod already out there that incorporates this idea. Maybe our new game can incorporate some of that. Again, I would just caution that the more we Mod, the greater chance some bug shows up to ruin the game when we are deep into it.
@Russia - Yea, quitting sucks, but I think I would rather have a Great great game that ends too early because of quitting, then have a boring, tedious game that grinds all the way to the very end with no quitting.Last edited by Sommerswerd; November 19, 2011, 10:38.

This leads us to the point where we MUST decide and put the nations which are abandoned to AIs or gift their cities/units to their neighbors/allies to make those who still play more competitive and interested in the game.
I can imagine this is the first game diplo-game to end up with Domination

Nope not getting that msg...
Yes the NAP is way over, let the War begin.
Naughty naughty France, leave me alone to bully weaker civs in peace!
Israel, how the hel! did you force me to give you a cease-fire? Anyway I offered peace (with a price)
Are we still using the story thread or are we doing our talking here and doing a final vote-count?

Ok thanks, no idea what to do here. England is only harassing Vikings waters. They have no invasion armies, seems more like a OOC revenge war or something. I did not play a couple of turns and now find out that there is war. Well with no German player as well this leaves for very little to do. I did join back this presuming dynamics could have changed during the last few months, but some still have it old foes forever.

Haha, sorry Toni. Since we had all declared the game to be over and no one was playing their turns, and since Robert was keeping the game up, I figured why not have a bit of fun and actually use this big navy of mine?Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012
