  • Suryavarman 2's sun is setting

His armies had strategically succeeded on three fronts and now all of Meduian rejoices. Or so he thinks. But he sees far and sees great deeds and treacherous betrayals. Such is the nature of mankind.

But his sun is rapidly sinking and he did not wish to trouble his son too much. He coulds hardly talk but knew his parting gift would be the same as that of Shiva and Ganesh before him. This would strengthen Suryavarman 3 but sadly he knew this was the last of the Suryavarman line, for his son was infertile - such is Shiva's wish.

Suryavarman 2 - the last of the despots and great military commanders of the Khmer

Suryavarman 3 - the first of those to represent the people in a new and complicated world where diplomacy more than ever was needed to survive.

Know when Suryavarman 2 dies for a great Golden Age will once again be celebrated by all Khmerians. This is the gift of the Gods - Khmer style...

        Greetings, Chief

There is a matter that gives me quite a headache and I apologize for adressing it so directly but I have to make haste in order to clarify the situation.

As you know, in the last years Rome's troops have taken much land from my Empire and they have transferred the ownership of a part of it to you. You haven't taken position regarding this in any way known to me or my advisors.

As far as I can tell, our nations have always been friends and in the current conflict, you had made every possible effort to remain neutral until this point.

So how can it be that now, not only you get involved in the conflict, but you support roman occupation of piercian land too ?

I hope you may remain the kind person you have ever been and question the rightfulness of that ownership.

        Please respond quickly.

        Aun'O Es'Ther Per'Hyl
Prestigious Aun'O Es'Ther Per'Hyl of the Peircian Empire,

The Wyandot people have in fact been following the situation between Peircia and Rome and have remained neutral - as we still are.

After Peircia declared war on Rome, we wondered were that would lead to.

Consider our surprise when Rome started a quick westward advance taking Peircian cities in their wake.

For us, it did not look good for the Peircian people.

However, Augustus of Rome surprised us all and requested a diplomatic meeting with Peircia (this is before Horse Valley and....well, the strangely named city to the north of Horse Valley had fallen to Roman forces). What was Peircia's response? Absolute SILENCE.

        This was very disturbing.

After Rome took the last 2 cities, and then offered them to the Wyandot People as a neutral buffer zone....Now the Piercian People speak up! Interesting.

Don't get us wrong, the Wyandot never asked for, nor wanted these two cities. We were asked to take them over as a neutral intity along with the promise that we would not gift them back to Piercia....so you see the crux of the situation, we could not gift them back to you, even if we wanted to. If we did, then the Wyandot word would be meaningless to the international community.

Aun'O Es'Ther Per'Hyl, please do not get the Wyandot people involved in your diplomatic dealings with Rome. If Rome should decide that you should have control of these cities, then the Wyandot will comply, since they were the one who gifted them to us. If we give them over without Rome's agreement - well, the Wyandot word would be in question - and our word will never be in question.

Honorable Aun'O Es'Ther Per'Hyl, is the Wyandot position now clear my friend?
If it helps, for the mean time, just consider us as...well, Peacekeepers between your two nations.

Chief Tarhe of the Wyandot Nation

        • The long journey of the Danais

At the beginning of his reign, Orestes had ordered to build a ship.
This ship, that would be named the Danais.
It sailed from Athens into the West, looking for new lands and peoples, Sparta had heard about only in tales and myths

The journey was long, the weather not always good for the small ship.
For many centuries the Spartans had only dared to sail nearby the shores.
But the Danais had ben constructed to sail through open oceans and seas.

The crew of the Danais had orders to contact new civilizations in the west.
The first civilization they contacted where the Holy Romans!
The city of Aachen was the first harbour for the Danais after many months.

The people of Aachen were friendly towards the Spartans.
Damage done to the ship was healed, and peace was signed between both great nations.

The Holy Roman city of Aachen

The next stop, more to the south, was Barcelona!
The Queen of Spain welcomed the Spartanians very friendly! She immediately accepted an invitation to come to Sparta herself.
The southern port of Barcelona was beautiful, close to the south pole, some ice mountains were visible. The air as cold and dry, the skies were beautiful.

The crew learned some Spanish words and teached the people from Barcelona some Greek.

          The Spanish city of Barcelona

Weeks later, the Danais arrived by night at London.
A warm welcome by the English, stories were shared from both continents.

The well defended English port and capital of London

A large fjord brought the Danais to the Celtic people.
The city of Aonghus laid strategically deep inside the continent, but still had access to the open ocean.
The Celtic people were friendly. An invitation to their ruler was send.

          The Celtic city of Aonghus

Then more to the north the Celts sailed into American territory.
Quickly contacts were made. The American people were very friendly.
The crew of the Danais was invited to speak with Roosevelt, the American leader.
At first there were many friendly talkings. Roosevelt was invited to come to Athens, and accepted the invitation happilly.
He asked for routes and directions, and the Spartans were obviously very happy to share their maps.

Then suddenly a messenger entered the room.
          It came from the Khmer.
Roosevelt was ordered to immediately break off all communications with Sparta, and surely not share any maps.

          The Spartan crew was shocked!
Was America not an independent nation?
Roosevelt apologized, and explained that the Americans had to obey the Khmer.

The goodbyes were friendly, but tense.
The crew of the Danais could not easily forget about those friendly Americans, being overruled by the Khmer so easily.

The small but very well located American port of Seattle

The last city the Danais visited before it would sail back to Athens was Led Zeppelin. A city close to the sea, but not really a port city.
The crew left the Danais and walked a few days to arrive at Led Zeppelin.

The Metalheads were a brave nation. Many stories were shared, and an invitation was handed to the Metalheads to visit Athens one day.

The inland city of Led Zeppelin

Then the Danais started their journey back home.
The crew had aged many years and had learned many things.

Most shocked the crew was by their discovery of the Khmer dominance on this continent. Many nations were under their thumb, larger nations were able to stay independant, but had to watch their words.
Sure, there were larger and smaller empires on the Spartan continent as well, but it would be unthinkable that Spartan messengers would order the Koreans to stop talking to a foreign civilization!
The Romans, Portuguese and Spartans kept some balance on the continent. And nations like the Piercians and the Mayans were strong and independant! Even the smaller nations, like the Russians, the Koreans, the Natives and the Oldonians were proud and under no ones rule.
The smallest nation, the Japanese, were even known for their huge bravery. Who would dare it to rule the Japanese? Sparta never would even start to think about such a thing. Relations on the Spartan continent were based on equality.

But on the new Continent the Khmer were clearly in charge.
A sad situation, the crew concluded. Happy to sail home again.
But home was far away, many many months to come!

But home was far away, many many months to come!
Suryavarman 3 is shocked by this distortion of the truth and wonders at the Spartans intentions in dividing Meduian and organising a meeting but ignoring the Khmer.

To set the record straight the Khmer were responding to a query by the Celts who have more information about our maps than any other. I'm sure Brennus understands our need to set the record straight here. And I do not think that America has such information on our maps in any case.

            ---

            Released from recent Hastings discussions:

From the Celts to the Hastings participants, "I feel it is necessary to inform you that I have been contacted by Sparta who is concerned about the developments on our continent as well as the war on the other continent. So as not to break any treaties not strategy amongst us, are there any secrets that any of you wish to keep hidden from the other continent? If so, please tell me now so I can keep them hidden."

            ---

General response to the Hastings participants by the Khmer,

            "Tidings,

Khmer have not been contacted from afar - of course. Beware divide and conquer. This is winning the peace - all of us sticking together. Khmer considers a Khmer victory a Meduian victory. A sabotaged Khmer will only mean a massive Roman/Portuguese juggernaut. Khmer is the balance but please do not see any threat from us if you wish trade overseas. However we like honesty and we seek explanations but you do not have to say of course.

Brennus and others - as advised earlier the Khmer map trade to you is to be kept secret if possible thanks.

            edit---

            great tidings dearest of friends!

            Suryavarman 3"

            ---

I, Suryavarman 3, do ask the Spartans and the crew of the Danais to come to Sushi City and include the Khmer in their diplomacy.

The Khmer has done much to help other nations, probably more than any other nation, including Sparta when we shared our maps long ago to reveal to you freely our new discovery of the time, New Sparta, named in the honour of Sparta and our newly formed relationship of the time.

We would like to know exactly which developments on Meduian are troubling the Spartans?

            tidings.

            • A Message to all leaders of the world,

I have received many responses to my request to all to refrain from adopting Emancipation in your lands! Nobody objected, some never answered, but everyone who did answer agreed that Emancipation is an evil that should not be accepted.

Nations that agreed to fight Emancipation are:
              Portugal
              Rome
              Piercia
              Russia
              Maya

Also the Khmer dislike Emancipation, but appear to be less keen to prevent other nations, except some large nations, to adopt it.

What to do with nations that will adopt Emancipation anyway, and bring riots and unhappiness to our cities?

              I suggest the following:

Article 1. When a nation adopts Emancipation it'll be warned to end it immediately
Article 2. Every nation gets 10 periods to return back from their wrong decisions
Article 3. If a nation asks for a delay to return back from their evil ways, we'll give them another 10 periods
Article 4. If a nation refuses to end Emancipation, we'll put sanctions on it.
              Article 5. Sanctions are:
              A. First we'll all end supplying this nation with health resources
              B. After 5 periods we'll end supplying this nation with happiness resources
              C. After 5 more periods we'll end supplying this nation any strategic resources
              D. After 5 more periods we'll all close our borders with this nation

Article 6. All sanctions will end as soon as a nation ends Emancipation.
Article 7. Nations who'll adopt Emancipation again will not get a 10 periods warning period nor a 10 periods delay. We'll start putting sanctions on them immediately, starting with A.
Article 8. If a nation adopts Emancipation for the 3rd time we'll immediately invoke all sanctions on them.
Article 9. If a nation adops Emancipation for the 4th time, we'll immediately invoke all sanctions, and add 5 periods to these sanctions from the moment on this nation ends Emancipation.
Article 10. For every extra time a nation adopts Emancipation again, 5 more periods will be added to the sanctions.

Article 11. If one of the treaty nations refuses to commit to the sanctions, it will be handled as if it adopted Emancipation itself. First 10 warning periods will be given, then sanctions will be applied on them according to Article 5.
Article 12. Every treaty nation can end step out of this treaty. After the declaration to step out of the treaty, it'll take 10 turns till it effectively left the treaty. during these 10 days this nation is living up to this treaty.

I hope that many nations are willing to sign this non-Emancipation treaty.
This treaty only concerns Emancipation. Nations that are at war with each other, can still together live up to this treaty.
Signers of this treaty are not in any other way connected to each other through this treaty then to fight Emancipation together.

              • I, Orestes of Sparta, declare hereby in the name of Sparta, to sign the above mentioned Emancipation Treaty, and live up to it's Articles.

                • To Suryavarman III of the Khmer

                  Greetings, Suryavarman,

I have received your letter regarding the journal of the Danais.
Let me first of all express that the crew of the Danais has reported exactly what they have encountered during their journey.
Their impression of what happened in the American capital has been logged. These are facts. How we intepretate these is up for debate, Therefore I am thankfull to you that you have addressed this issue immediately.

Let be clear that Danais never sailed to Meduaian to divide the continent.
We sailed to it to meet new civilizations.
The Danais never sailed to Khmer territory because we have had contacts with the Khmer for many centuries already.
I thought that this would be very clear.

Thanks for your invitation to come over to Sushi City one day.
                  I will certainly do so!
Several foreign leaders are coming to Sparta and Athens soon.
After they all have left our cities again, I will board the Danais and visit your personally.

We find it discomforting that some civilizations are against all citizens being treated equally. Why are people afraid to let their slaves have a voice? Although we have slavery, our slaves are not treated like property. They are provided for with food, shelter and a little spending money in exchange for their servitude. Although we have not declared emancipation, we see no reason not to if we choose to do so.

                      • To Orestes of Sparta,

I am curious to know if America agreed to the same terms you proposed to us. I find it a little unsettling that you invited us to study at Oxford and to discuss worldly diplomacy, but would not show us the way to get there because we would not support your claim to land west of Sparta. We had no knowledge of this land mass nor the political positioning and claims to said land. For us to agree to such terms with ignorance to the situation is unwise. As a great leader yourself, I'm sure you would agree that agreeing to anything without complete knowledge can lead to the downfall of a country. Perhaps you believe the Celtic people in being a small civilization is also small in brain size.

The Celtic people call what you did "baiting". If you really wanted us to meet in Athens, I think you would have supplied a map to do so, perhaps even one without much detail could have been drawn by the captain of the Danais if you were so concerned about your map being leaked to others.

Based on the recent writings of your interaction with America, the Celtic people believe that you really had no interest in helping us. I'm not sure what you hoped to gain with our support especially considering that we have had no interaction with world leaders outside of our continent.

                        • Augustus of Rome

                          Es'Ther Per'Hyl,

I am pleased that after 100 years of pleading that the Piercian leadership enter into communication, finally you have done so. Your silence punctuated only by expressions of threats and hatred, and the launching of new wars against my friends, have done little to help your cause.

The Russians, your friends ? This is ridiculous. Isn't it because you threatened them that Asiz declared war on you at first ? Now, they have betrayed their masters. The only mesures I have taken, are to forbid them access to my lands while I could be far more vindicative. The Tribune Hieronymus was even ready to help Asiz in complete extermination of the Russians if they betrayed the Piercian Empire. They are not your friends.

You continue to suggest that the extension of Roman civilization to two cities whose populations are of majority Piercian descent is 'excessive'. In doing so you blatently ignore your own actions in forming a military alliance against Rome, betraying a sworn treaty. That alliance in its action and its plans published publicly intended to destroy or capture many Roman cities, at least five is demonstrable, more would have been likely. What you have received is less than what you intended for Rome, so forgive our lack of pity.

Asiz planned the capture of Velitrae and failed. Don't blame us for the action of Sparta or the Maya. Your troops have captured 50% of the Piercian Empire and this is excessive.

                          I have three suggestions:

                          1. If you don't want to lose a war, don't start one.

I already said that Mee'Ting is a harsh but fair price to pay. I don't debate that.

                          2. If you want people to make deals with you, don't break them.

Asiz declared war on Rome because the tribune constantly questionned his reliability in public. There is no betrayal here, this is a war for honor. His pride cost my Empire far too much for me to just sit back and accept it.

                          3. If all your friends desert you and your army is weak, make peace quickly not a century later.

Taking control of the Piercian Empire and getting rid of those still loyal to Asiz took me far too much time for attending those formalities. The weakened state of the Empire was obvious, but still your armies continued to kill everyone and everything on their path.

Your strategy appears to have been - (a) betray my sworn treaties, (b) form alliances and try to seize many cities, (c) if I lose plead 'oh its unfair'. Sorry I am not interested. You started this war. You lost it. Rome has gained far less from it than what you intended Rome to lose from it. We have given half what we gained to the weakest nation on our continent.

As I said, there were no plans from our side to conquer 50% of your territory. Asiz started this war, I didn't. I am trying to restore what he destroyed. The control of the Mee'Ting is far more as anything the Piercian Empire could ever have gained from this war.

We have given half what we gained to the weakest nation on our continent.

Not only the Wyandot are not the weakest nation on our continent, but this also is meaningless to me. 50% of territorial loss still is 50% of territorial loss. I don't doubt that your corruption of those who desired not to be involved suits your needs, but sorry, I won't play that game.

And don't lie - Horse Valley has five mines as well as horses in its area - and you are trying to tell the world it has no military production. Its safer in Wynadot hands.

Horse Valley was hosting the only boudhistic monastry in the Piercian Empire. It was a city of commerce and yes, horse-elevators. But theese people were civilians. No military training facility was ever built in Horse Valley. The adjacent mines were used in order to build economic and cultural infrastructure only.

As always I remain open to any diplomatic contact with yourself and with other nations. However, the starting point to negotiations has to be truthful recongition of your own actions, not a re-writing of history so you are the innocent party or that when you betrayed your oaths and joined three other nations in attacking Rome you didn't really intend Rome any harm.

As I said above : Yes, Asiz intended to get control over the gold and the marble of Velitrae. It is understandable that he needed to gain some profit from the complex diplomatic situation. But criplling the Roman Empire until it would have become an economical dwarf never even crossed his mind.

                          Augustus of Rome.

                          • Greetings to the Celtic leaders,

Your negative tone caught me by surprise.
It is true that I have not answered your latest letter yet. The reason behind this is that I ordered my map makers to create a special map for you that shows the route to Sparta without giving away confidential information.

I immediately understood your position. You cannot accept a deal if you don't know all the terms. I hope that you understand my position as well. I can't give you confidential information if I can't be sure that you won't take advantage of this information against my will.

I am disappointed that your latest response was that negative!
The Spartan intention was to create new connections with nations far away.
I never had the intention to cause this unrest.
What is the reason that you, and also the Khmer in a letter earlier, are that suspicious? Are there reason to be suspicious? Speak open to me, if there are things we need to discuss.

Sparta's journey to your continent was a journey without any pre-judgements.
It was all new for us. But now we contacted a continent filled with suspicion, fear, whispering, suppression, etc. What is going on on your continent?

To answer your question, Sparta and America have never made any deals.
Before we could sign deals with the Americans, the Khmer interrupted us and made the Americans cancel everything.
Either the Khmer have some very good spies, or the Americans have informed the Khmer about us.

I get the idea that many nations first consult the Khmer before they can talk to us.

Regarding my exceptions towards the Celts.
I hoped to sign enduring peace, exchange stories and information, trade, etc.
We wanted to help you out by perhaps giving your resources or technologies.

Yes, I am really interested in you visiting Athens.
I don't understand why you would think that my invitation was a fake? Why would I do that? Why are you that suspicious?
I still mean it, come to Athens! You're free to study our books and talk with our many great scientists and scientific specialists!

I will no demand an official apology from you. I do understand that things are more tense on your continent, and that you therefore need to be more suspicious. But since I received your letter only a couple of days ago, I hope that you can learn to show some more patience from now on though.

Lets forget about this conversation, and meet in Athens soon!
My map makers will soon show you the way!

                            • Orestes received a 2nd letter from the Celts.
                              He read it:

We find it discomforting that some civilizations are against all citizens being treated equally. Why are people afraid to let their slaves have a voice? Although we have slavery, our slaves are not treated like property. They are provided for with food, shelter and a little spending money in exchange for their servitude. Although we have not declared emancipation, we see no reason not to if we choose to do so.

                              Orestes got angered.
"Everybody in Sparta is happy! There is no unrest anywhere!
We are the most wealthy nation on earth, according to the latest reports.
Nobody is living in poor conditions." he said against his scribes. They nodded.

"We have representation! All City States are represented in Sparta, and all cities are represented in their City States! People are happy! Aren't they?" he asked to the scribes

"Yes mylord, they are! Sparta can be considered to be one of the happiest nations on earth!" they answered.

"That's what I want my people to be: happy. And now I have heard about possible riots if other nations adop this 'emancipation' thing. How can these celts be happy with riots? Why does he want to bring unrest to our cities? Why does he want to slay our slaves, who are currently very happy?"

"I don't know" the chief scibe said.

"Our slaves are well protected! They get a house and food from their masters, they are treated very well! It's exactly this caste system that has given that much profit o all Spartans! And now this foreigner, who lives far away from Sparta, wants things to chance in Sparta? I do not interrupt with is internal politics either, do I? SO let them stay away from ours. I just don't want his internal politics result in riots in our cities. Everbody is happy in here Sparta. EVERYONE."

The chief scribe said: "Shall I write that to the Celts sir?"

"No, no...." Orestes said, while sitting down in his chair again.
"No, our relations with the Celts are tense already. Apparently our map makers haven't finished their maps quickly enough, which resulted in angry celts" he continued.

"But they started working on it only a couple of days ago!" the chief scribe said with his eyes wide open

"Yes, I know I know, things are apparently very tense overthere at the other side of the ocean. Nations distrusting each other. There have been huge wars there! Entire civilizations have been murdered! That makes our small wars with Rome a walk in the park. There's a lot of trauma there! And you can hear that from the tone they speak to us." Orestes told.

"Like the tone of the Khmer letter" one of the younger scribes asked.

"Yes, yes. They are just very suspicious. They don't trust anybody. If you have seen millions of dead bodies, you would no trust anybody either!
But we can't blame them for that. Let's just try to handle them with respect to gain their trust again. If trust could only find it's way to that continent, people would be really free!" Orestes said.

"Freedom that can't be bought by Emancipation! Freedom that only comes from happiness!" the wise scribe said.

"Exactly!" Orestes said. "And make therefore sure that nothing of his conversation ever leaves this house. We need to be cautious in our communications with the Celts. Only in that way we may be able to create enduring and healthy peace"

                              • To the Celts

Hereby I send you a rough map of the world.

There are two sea routes from Celtia to Sparta.
I'd advise you to take the route from Celtia to the West, because it's shorter.
But you can also sail through the east.
Sparta is the empire in the south-west of the map.

I hope that you won't take disadvantage of our maps.

                                Orestes of Sparta
