I think we should have the two continents sperated with sperate story threads.
One in the old world the other in the new, only very limited contact before optics (the "need to settle a city to be able to sail with galleys there" idea that could simulate things like the Viking exploration of the new world).
The third continent should not be accesible in this fashion (only with astronomy).

The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

If you can reach another continent by building a 'viking city', then you could also reach that continent without the city..... imho...
I can't think of any situation where building a city would make it possible to bring you further!
Someone enlighten me!
Culture like Vampgelus has said.
It is also it is possible to use sea ice to do this.

My vote is for any map-script (not a set map) that involves late-game discovery of other civs (so you can't meet everyone straight away). I'm personally partial to Islands, Custom_Continents, or SmartMap9.1.

"Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there's no conspiracy"
I think it was decided by a majority that we didn't want the classic terra type set-up.
With 18 players I think it makes sense to have two major starting landmasses, with perhaps a third unsettled landmass (to add the exploration element).
I have a good idea of what is going to be interesting while keeping game balance.
I think if someone has the inspiration and commitment to do a good map then I'm happy to go with this.

I'm on it. Already started it actual.
The reality of it is that 18 different people are never going to be able to agree a map type. I have noted several suggestions and will incorporate them into the map (and then some).
Here is a question though...
I will be placing the starting locations last. These will be totally random (they will be assigned a number, not a civ). We will have to devise some way of randomly assigning them.
HOWEVER, an idea I had was to have certain "numbers" assigned to certain terrain types (ie. 1,2,3,4 = arid, 5,6,7,8,9 = temperate, 10,11,12 = jungle, etc...)
In this way, certain civs would get terrain that is historicly accurate to their civ. (ie. egypt, persia, arabia, and ethiopia would randomly be assigned starting locations from the 1,2,3,4 pool. Maya, Aztecs, Inca would be assigned starting locations from the 10,11,12 pool).
Of course the above is just an example of what I am talking about. It would be tailored based on what we end up with as civ choices. A neat side effect of this setup would be that like civs would tend to start in proximity of each other (ie. China, Japan, and Korea would be in roughly the same area, as opposed to spread out all over the map). This could be further emphisised by breaking the "pools" down by racial type. (ie. the temperate numbers are divided into europian and oriental).
Just an idea... let me know what you guys think of it.
PS: Keep in mind that a temperate start isn't nessisarily going to be better on adverage than say an arid or cool start. I plan on compensating those traditionally "worse" starts so that everything is realitivly balanced.
