By definition a Ladder game can be any game played by more than 1 person. PBEM, PBTS, simul turns, with and without an AI, any game of civ can be a "Ladder" game.

A game that is, say, medieval era, quick speed, 100 turns, 2 city elimination, 4v4 TBG with no huts, AW, no TT on fast timer, is a very specific game. This type of game can be a ladder game, or it might not be. All that the "ladder" part means is that at the end of the game the losers report to each of the winners, and that no one quits mid way through the game (one team can concede though if all but one of that team decide that they want to). The scoring system in all games in CIV hasn't changed; the ladder uses the same scores provided in game to determine the winner, so if something is wrong with that complain to Alexman or Trip...

As to what CS said...the majority of MPers don't play these settings. The majority of players play FFAs, or teamers, sure, but they aren't ladder, but the skill in these games is alot lower than in (the majority of) ladder games. Don;t get me wrong, there are noobs who play in ladder games and are really awful players. But more people play MP on quick speed than on anyother setting. The maps vary, the timer varies, the game type can vary, but the majority of MP games are played on quick.

All Myleague is is a ranking system for the players, but it is a joke because the ranks don't mean anything and even skill changes to rapidly to be of any use.

I don't mean to offend anyone but the handfull of people on Apolyton that regularly play together in MP games don't make a community they make a microcosm, Apolyton is probably the most anti-MP fan site around, and I started my Civ life here, back with Markos and his Greek Civ Site. :P It's just a statement of fact, me and Markos tried to introduce more MP centric events to poly when Civ4 came out, and Apolyton and Civ4players are official affiliate sites, but other than that we failed to garner any interest.

And as Krill has stated any game type can be reported as a ladder game...but there are more common game types than others, all do to the factors I stated above.

By using the word handful, you show your ignorance.
But I do have to agree that Apolyton is weak on MP, but I wouldn't say the most anti-mp.

I use handful in relation to the 900ish that play MP at Civ4players, of course there is no way to really measure how many people her play MP on a regular basis as this forum is not designed to track that data.

So it is all subjective, I freely admit that :P But base my subjective opinions on how much I find that I post on the MP forums at CFC vice here. Now there may be other fan sites that are equally low on MP activity, but Apolyton is a key fan sight not just a small niche site.

And I would add that if I could figure a way to strengthen poly's MP focus I would gladly spend time doing so.

Apolyton has a lot (at least 30) of PTBS players, in addition to PBEMers (no idea how many nowadays), Diplogamers, and Demogamers. Certainly not 900, but I'd guess close to 100 play one or more regular MP games in some form.

We just don't play as many 'quick' MP games... we're a bit more relaxed

Well I enjoy PBEM and Pitboss games as well, but they won't replace real time simultaneous turns MP games for most people any time soon. And diplo game are a nice alternative as well but like our epic games, can be difficult to organize and keep them moving.

That's why many people have joined the "rah" friday and saturday night games. People stick it out until it's pretty clear they are totally toast. The last game I played, I stuck it out to the bitter end... after losing my entire empire, I successfully defended my capital twice, until it finally died on the third try.

Sometimes, there are 10 or 12 player games... making real life diplomacy an important skill

It's that last bit I need clarification on. Once you have made contact in our Rah games:

                            No tech exchange.
But resource exchange yes? Like spices ?
and Diplomatic exchange yes? Like No attack ? like agreeing Combined attack?

                              Yep... not tech trading...

Diplomacy is all "REAL LIFE" including back stabbing.... and yes, open borders and resource trading allowed.

Get 10 or 12 people and Diplomacy make a BIG difference

Yes I wish that there were more full FFA's on the ladder, but unfortunately they have been tainted by unscrupulous players that make pre-game alliances, instead of just proper geo-political decisions within the game. But most Epic games are FFA's so there are some for the trustworthy players to engage in.
