While the board position usually dictates my diplomacy efforts, there are certain people that I know I can trust more than others, and more willing to work with them.

For example, Trev has noted I work with rah (my twin) brother often... well, no surprise there. When I make a deal with him, he almost always honors it. That's key in the game, because I've made deals with some people, only to see that it was all a lie from the beginning. Needless to say, I don't make deals with those people in the future unless it is absolutely needed. On the other hand, rah will be the first person to take me out if the position dictates it... which he has on multiple occasions.

that's the hard part of backstabbing.
perhaps it serves you in the current game, but human players (unlike AI) will remember your backstabbing in the next game.

In our current game we have the rule that you don't bring emotions from past games to the new games, but you tend to learn to know each other nevertheless

I try to be different from game to game to avoid to become predictable. Being predictable in large-scale multiplayer games is dangerous

Certain backstabbing is to be expected. Like late in the game. I have no problem with early deals finally ending in usually a "bad" way As they say in Highlander, "there can be only one".

What I will hold against people is early backstabbing. Like when you agree with a person to take out a shared neighboor, and the second you commit your forces, you find out that in reality, they have a deal to wipe you out.

Or you make a deal to share a border with somebody, and the minute you move your troops to another front, they gut you...

Those are the kind of things that will effect future potential deals.

Tell me about it. It too me quite awhile to outgrow the Vox Controli backstab of Gathering Storm back in the civ3 MP demo game. Much longer than it took GS to send Vox packing.

True. It is s grey area. You can state the rule/guideline, but as Ming says, folks have memories.

It sounds like you agree with me that ladder isn't a type of game but a scoiring system or perhaps better described as a league.

If that's the case I don't see any reason for the following comment you made when I said exactly that:
