That was a weird one, because when I checked the map settings on f8 it confirmed that we were on "large" and with 7 players, there just should not have been that much space. My own capital started way the hell out at the end of the long penisula, and it is possible that several other civs started very far away from the others as well by being on distant coasts or out of the way places.
The landmass itself seemed much larger than a typical "large pangea" too, almost like a huge."Cunnilingus and Psychiatry have brought us to this..."

the map was too large for me as I struggle at the best of times with the part of my game where you expand endlessly. With randomly rolling Japan I knew my days were numbered from the start, and thankfully MD put me out of my misery. I think I did a fair job defending, but MDs stack were not as large as I was expecting and I dont know why.Safer worlds through superior firepowerComment

The right size for 7 players is standard, with low coastline. Going large is asking for trouble...
