Trying to be very objective without the joy getting in the way.

    Game settings:

    Great Plains
    Settler
    Small map
    High sea level
    American Civ- (leader GW)

Some items to get use to:

    1. I did not see my pop go down after building a worker or settler?
    2. Did making roads clear forrest? ...fogot to check
    3. the ambient sounds in game are not the bother I though they would be
    4. Civpedia is not that bad to work, could be more like Civ3
    5. NO chops.....going to be different

Now some playback and thoughts...I played up to 970 BC

Everything seemed to flowing alright, getting use to interfaces and what not. I really like the whole concept of all the basic information on one screen, furhter information on the advisory screens and information on the mouse roll over.

but even over AI units ? and even when you are war with them ?. Maybe only if you a unit within LOS

It did not seem long before two other AI civs founded religons
(somewhere between turns 5-10) Took me a while longer.
I was thinking of the worse case scenario of my cities converting while I had no religon. Other AI cities seemed to convert often.

converting never happened to me !

Growing pop seemed real easy then add hamelt and camp builds to check out their effects. I made sure to build near forrest and or rivers for health reasons.

settler choice I quess. Using Ham&Camp&farms{HCF} was real easy to grow cities with out grainary or aquaduct
    1 at 7 pop (river/forrest)
    2 at 6 ( 1 river/forrest 1 forrest to see the difference)

With 5 cities and +5 gpt, I am not seeing the issue of cost of cities built...HCF?

With a small map it was not long before I meet over half the AI civs. So I saved the game, then checked out some aggressive moves agaisnt one who is hating me, and then trade in general.

AI's do not like wars !...enough said

My first mistake was in attempting trade and not paying attention to the new screen interface. This mistake was in accepting open borders with Russia.
Only once in 6 trades did another civ offer resources at best. Due to camps, I had several resources they did not.

Building and changing ques in cities is not a good thing, but the rebound of the switch is you go back to where you left off, not much off a penalty

Building wonders was not much of an issue. I built what ever I needed and got it.

Next game, a more difficult setting..here is what I accomplished by 970AD

Or at least that's how I read it!
But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

          review part II

Just finished playing through a time victory

I swear the Russian AI saw me trying to make a bee line for the only uranium on the map. I had rr thru the majority of my territory, and I still lost the race.

Not only that, within a short period of time windmills, mines and farms were built.

Seeing how I wanted to see the nukes for myself, I kinda declared war on Russia. With plenty of tanks and SEALS it was not as easy as one would hope, but the task was done and I had MY uranium, plua I did some extra pearing down the Russian AI.

The AI seemed to know the gaps in my lines to well and kept on picking off what I thought where safe workers.
          ALWAYS leave a reguard.....

Needles to say the NUKE is all that and a bag of chips.
Even when the AI shoots a couple down...WOW, vever seen that in the Civ3.

Some other things I was shocked and awed over:
          1. AI using fighters effectively to pillage tiles
          2. Two different stacks attacking one of mine, from different directions
          3. RR movement better, still to good on a small map
          4. Build ques actually going to zero, after switching
          5. Upgrading units outside of a city, as long as you are in you boarder
          6. Closed boarders !!
          7. Seeing trees grow, I guess that is a auto function.
          8. Pillaging towns, villages is cash cow until gone

          DO NOT:
          1. Attack a city that has been in defend mode since the whole game, Even had them out numbered, thinking I had the right promotions picked.
Over all it was an almost even exchange, the AI had 2 left over.
          My stack .....gone
          2. Dont build helicopters, IMO just not worth it.

          Weird/Normal stuff
          1. If you have enough different religons, you can convert one of your own cities
          2. You can still have tanks in 1890

Should picked a map to checked out the Naval units as well, that is just a game away ....

Tanks in 1890 all depends on the difficulty and research paths...

Nukes, hmm, you liked them? Thye got to be my first modding target. I doubled the diplomatic penalties for using them and significantly increased the damage - to me, nukes otherwise seem to be like a bombing run on steroids, only much more expensive and one shot. Now I modded nukes to be much more powerful.

I love your list of good things .

                  started a second game

                  this time I picked:
                  Germans
                  Large Map
                  Cont's
                  Ragging Barbs

Played for the first hour or so

                  The first things I noticed:
Buddhism founded first again in a far off land(FOL)
Hinduism founded second again in FOL
-Even started as third game just to see, so three for three

gee who are my neighbors ?

                  yep...Russia and Japan

Ragging barbs are so entertaining !
I lost one city to them, and so did another city
Only one barb city taken back. They seem to grow to fast ?

                  screenie shortly

and just like Civ3, I read the manual after the first game
so I answered some of my own thoughts
and I am not doing as well either ?

                    2nd game

Here is a story of Platypus Rex having a struggle

My game plan being to keep closed boarders all game long.
What will the outcome be ??

Exploring happily with my first ever scout, beat up a lion, then a bear. I was holding my breath on the first animal attack, relief.

Even had a scout get a promotion because of them

Knowing there would be more of this entertainment, every worker and settler gets an escort. Turns later I was happy with this call. Just not enough warriors to protect the roads being built.

                    Gads Part 1
                    I am on a Island
                    With Russia and Japan

Loss some workers and military units here and there, but enough to distract my growth with cities and on culture. At least Japan is in the middle of this sandwhich.

So here comes some not so harmful looking Barbs....right.
Down goes one of my cities. I know change ques to walls, no more chances.

So I am trying to muster what attck forces I have to reclaim my rightfull city. Japan beats me to it by a turn....filth. Build obelisk in the nearest city to that one.

I actually have three decent cities out of five. Now If I could only get to finish a wonder...filth

                    Gads Part 2
The Barbs keep on pressing my capital city...cool with me, so far two promotions. Took defense promotions!!. If I lose my capital, you will hear my scream.

Not to long ago I was within 60 points of either two civs. Then I watched the gap grow and grow and grow. I know now the barb harassment is not a the same level.

My question is can barbs found their own city?

There is no Civ in the land behind me, so I go start expanding in that direction and quess what I see. A second barb city, with three units in it.

Shall I take it by force ? I have doubts on a cultural bomb.

The blue is my friends the Barbs

I'm not sure if these are questions but I'll answer them anyway.
btw: there is a manual you know.

                      1. I did not see my pop go down after building a worker or settler?

Cities don't grow while building either a worker or a settler.

                      2. Did making roads clear forrest? ...fogot to check

                      No

                      5. NO chops.....going to be different

YES chops...going to nees bronze working.

                            part 2- the struggle continues

what have I got myself into ?

have I regretted my policy of open border ?

                            -YES-
I am trying to do a quick hit and run trade and its working

                            Some details

I lost track of how many turns I ran in the red, needless to say I lost over half of my treasury

Cathrine is starting to get real PO'd on my closed borders with her and my open border with Japan andmy choice of religon. I went with the same religon as Japan to avoid the cost of conversions !

I have a great merchant moving thru Japan.
I will get close to Russia, open border agreement, move GM in to farthest city and get some her gold from a trade route, then close border.

Have I finally removed the last of the barbarians?
Can I afford another city to expand into the what I hope is the last part, to keep themfrom coming back?

A few more civs find me by carravel.
I keep on dropping down the score list, only 8 more civs to find to verify I am in last place

It actually seems to help to choose the recommended path

The biggest thing I can do now is defense with enough culture to not finish last.

                            Latest update

                            I have built 1 wonder , 1 great person
BUT I am not bleeding red !
