Give it another day or two, but it looks like the early favorite is Mr.Washington.

I don't mind Saladin, but I'd rather not see a Philosophical civ be the first one we play - it's easy to get trite with the great leaders when you're Philosophical, since you get so darned many of them. They're a very precious resource, and PHI civs get to ignore that to some extent. Also, their Guild-based resourceless UU makes for serious beeline bait, and can be used as a bigtime crutch.

Fun civ, but not good for learning a game on.

Meh. I'm not as concerned as you are about such things for this course. This is just intro to CivIV. We're gonna have TONS more courses.

Washington is fine. Frankly, I'd say any leader is fine for this course.

You've thought it out the way we would normally, and that's fine. But not all of us are as focused yet. You've been playing the game for a long time, Fried, whereas many others have not. Remember that.

Arrian - I think the logic behind his reasoning is exactly what you're talking about though. He's advocating a very generalized experience that won't get bogged down in details that are specific to a specific leader/civ/way to play the game. We all get a chance to freelance without traits that lead us in a certain direction or an early/midgame UU to win the game for us.

but starting with philisophical or some such isnt necissarily going to take away from that generalized start. It will just give people an easier experience with one of the games main new concepts, great leaders.

Sure normally they wont be normally as easy to generate, but for now I figure its just a way to play around with the new concepts.

Well, Washington looks to be the winner... right now it kinda looks like Secretariat at Belmont.

              So the course starts when?

If we want to keep the first course as general as possible, keep in mind that Washington is Financial, one of the strongest traits that affect strategy in a big way. People might get a false impression of the strength of cottages versus farms, for example.

Maybe it's better to go with Japan (Organized and Aggressive).

Well, Washington is now up over 50% with no one else even above 10% except Saladin at 17... I guess with over 48 hours passed that's conclusive?

What's the next step? Determine the map type, world size, and game speed?

Yeah, all the other settings. I'd assume no aggy AI or raging barbs for the first game. For world size I strongly urge people to remember that some of us have less-than-impressive systems and the larger the map the rougher it's gonna be on our old computers. Game speed... hard to see why we'd do epic over normal...

For the most part, standard across the board would be my choice - not because that's what I often play (I do), but because that's in keeping with the first AU game... we're just getting started. I'm sure we'll have entire courses devoted to specific map types.

I've always been a fan of Standard settings(including size) unless the course is specifically about something related.
I'd say we should go with Standard Size and Normal Speed as the max for the first game, or it'll never be done.

                        Hi Everyone,

I Don't understand why Elizabeth for England was not a choice. The Red Coats when Rifling is discovered is a great unit for advancing your civilization in the Middle game when things begin to get interesting.

                        Have a Great Day,

because this AU game isnt going to be about one UU's powers like you mentioned.. rather its about getting a general feel for the game.

First game on all default settings makes sense.

I wish I'd thought of this before, but I would have suggested we go with a Civ that has neither Mysticism nor Mining to start, so we can avoid/address later the merits of both the Worker-chop/Bronzeworking jumpstart and the Early-religion grab.

Oh well. Fishing/Agriculture would have been a good one, I think. Not sure who that is. Too late now.
