  • Killing Scouts

In a recent MP game, one of the players killed off an enemy scout that was near his land very early in the game. Granted, he had to declare war on another human to do so, but what the heck, nobody is really "friendly" in MP games This allowed the player to probably get a few more huts that were near his land, and keep another player from getting them.

I've started doing this more and more in SP games, expecially if I have only run across one AI early. It takes awhile for the AI to get more "searchers' near me, and usually provides me with more huts and a better lay of the land around me than the AI will have. As far as having an early war declared, the AI will usually allow peace after some time has passed. And usually, if there is only one AI near me, I don't really care what he thinks about me since he will probably be my first target anyway.

So... what do other people do when they find those nasty enemy scouts near their land early. Do you take them out or let them live. What advantages and disadvantages to you see.

Absolutely I do this, have for years. Rarely I may leave them alone, but that's only if I can't catch the fast buggers or if I'm in a particularly nice mood. Depends a little on who the AI is, too.

You're right, MP is fair game. If I don't want to piss them off I'll send a msg and say you're in my area so kindly go back and stop scouting or I'll consider it a tacit DOW.

Like everything else it depends on where and when. I'd be a lot more careful in SP if the AI was right by me as early on they have far better production if far poorer tactics. MP I reckon kill and have done on a Saturday night type job. Different in a PBEM or PitBoss where you're going to be looking at a long game and and an early long term enemy is maybe not the best idea.

I usualy start all civs as "minor nations" which means we're all at war until later in the game anyway, so I kill everything on sight.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

If you're playing at the higher levels, you do have to be a bit more careful since the AI starts with archers and you don't. In MP for me it depends. If I've cleaned out the close huts I may let them live. And you've got to be quick. Nothing worse then declaring and attacking to just be moving to an empty square that the scout just left.

Don't declare first. Declare by attacking. At least in the open, the game asks every single time combat types have contact, "Declare War?" say yes and hit him. He won't get away that time.

This activity related to several AIs can really screw up your early trade routes, since no one but you can reach your cities. This is the Aggressive Tokugawa method of handling foreign relations: "The only good foreign relation is a dead foreign relation."

Needless to say, I don't kill scouts at Monarch level, especially of the close-in neighbors.

I could swear the last time I did the attack first then declare, the little bastard got away.
I'll have to try that again in our next mp game. Maybe his move went before my move.

You will need the 3.19 version if you wish to play MP, since everybody in the game has to have the same version. Instead of trying the update feature in the game... just download the patch directly from Firaxis.

And do the install from here.

If you got the game from D2D... you need to download the patch from there.

                    Good luck.

I'll keep a sharp look out for you then.

Actually in MP games the host often has a slight advantage because if two people move at the same time the host's unit gets to complete its move first.

I'm not sure about that. It used to be that way in CIV II.

i did, twice. i also did it in-game, then also went to fireaxis and tried it from there, ive given civ4 full access in my firewall and still nothing, i dont get it, when i patched vanilla with the 1.73 it worked perfectly, but when i do it with BTS as soon as i hit the install button the window vanishes and the install doesnt start, i have the discs no D2D here, i'll try again but i think i'll get the same result, maybe once ive gotten used to BTS i'll just try going to MP and seeing what happens if no one here has any ideas, or i might have to email fireaxis then wait 2 months .
