What is the best civ/leader combo for MP?

Yeah... there will be losses... especially if the cities are on hills. But frankly, that's what tribs are for... to die so that others may live
With enough tribs, even axeman and swordsman can finish the job. I never concern myself too much with the loss of colleratial damage units. You just have to make sure you have enough coming up to the front to make up for the losses, because nothing slows down an advance more than the lack of those units.Keep on Civin'

Except of course against those MPers who go for Drill IV longbows. Then all the trebs in your empire won't save you... you'll just have to use 3 or 4-1 odds and slug it out.
OF course late game I find that PRO and PHIL traits wane somewhat, especially against FIN civs. That +10-15 extraper city is not possible to keep up with.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

When I notice Drill IV Longbows in a border city, I usually decide another direction might be the better way to attack
But seriously... tribs are meant to die. You are going to lose some... and once they are nicked a few times, even Drill IV longbows will die.Keep on Civin'

Yeah, you've mentioned that a few time.
Yeah when I see drill IV longbowman, I'll go after someone else while waiting for cannons.
Even though I've never played FFH, I assume cannons work better than archmages. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

No cannons, so no comparison. FFH plays like a role-playing game based on combat rather than character development. Some folks in the accompanying mods did some great, unrecognizable stuff with the basic build & fight game engine. Really unrecognizable, in FFH's case.No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

On OP, the Romans are single-handedly the best civ, IF the player takes advantage of the UU to master all of his neighbors. My experience beyond that says the Incas, Darius and the Persians, and Mali are the best. I have had good luck with Ethiopia, and, if I can last to the Renaissance, with Elizabeth. Louis XIV is also fun and has a fighting chance. One of the crazies (Shaka, Toku, Monty) may also fit your style, if you play in your face from start to finish. I particularly like Monty as that Alter UU (sub for courthouse) is very useful long after I would give up on slavery with the rest of the civs. If you want to "turtle up" and build, then Gilgamesh with the early courthouse and Sitting Bull are good for that both permitting an axeman-period rush with their uu. Just thinking. No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

I don't mind Shaka that much. While you really have to pay attention to your economy... his early UU with movement can make for some quick rushes. His UB does help the economy some. I'm not a big fan of Monty
Our MP games are usually random civs, so we get the opportunity to play the good and the bad.Keep on Civin'
