Depends on game format. Gamespy game? Get BW, find you have no copper, get archery, build 2 workers, archer, send it forward while roading, build settler, settle for copper. Will almost always work, but you have to be fast. TBH most time people don't get copper in their cap, so by doing this you are pretty much perfectly OK for hte rest of the game. Building more than 2 archers though and you are probably doing something wrong.

And what if copper is nowhere to be found? And/or besides, the question is whether to go WITHOUT archery and straight for IW. Read the thread before you post please...

Having played with him before, I can say he doesn't lack a sack.

I looked at the name of every poster here. I think I could win an argument with any of them, never mind a game of civ.
And I thought the question was about hte best civ for an FFA with no tech trading?
And to the 'topic' at hand:
Then win? RFM.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

You immediately go for BW every time because you need slavery in an MP game and, as Rah said, Archery isn't going to do you much good. So if you don't have bronze near you and you can't quickly take it from someone else (early warrior rush for the win!) then I'd skip archery and go straight to IW hoping you can quickly nab an iron patch.
Ugh, this just happened to me in MP. No bronze so rushed to IW. Found iron but far away and before I could rush to hook it up got killed by the axeman rush. There weren't even horses nearby which sucks because I randomly got the Mongols.
Yeah... in MP games, when you don't get horses or copper nearby, it turns into a game of time. You sound pretty unlucky... usually when you have no copper or horses, iron is usually close by... BUMMER

Yeah, normally when there is no copper or horses near, iron is usually in my fat cross or close. And when it isn't you're lucky to survive till feud.

If that happens, hopefully your opponents are far away and fighting each other. If you nsurvive to feudalism, even in an SP game, I would be surprised. Especially with raging barbarians, your opponents have to wade through a sea of barbs just to get to your archers. You have no money, no science, and little hope. In SP, I hold out for Oracle to help, but even that is unlikely with iron far away and the other two gone.
BTW, if that was the case, who would be the best civ? Pacal and Sitting Bull get units that need no resources. Would they be the best?

Sitting Bull is the best, since axes would still chew up Pascal's UU.
Dog warriors covered by highly promoted archers are a tough combo to handle pre-contruction.
Or Mansa and his skirmishers. The Babs UU isn't strong enough to handle chariots.
