Getting a shrine built very early in the game works a treat, just playing a huge pangaea map game where I built stonehenge, then teched Code of laws, founding the religion. 2 turns before I founded Confucianism, I had my first Great Prophet, so religion founded and shrine built same turn. It so quickly spread to all neighbours and further as it was the first shrine built, and the money just poured in without having to build missionaries. I finished building the Oracle about the same time, so I took currency as the free tech and rushed it in the shrine city. Financially the game rocked which was just as well as very soon I was fighting half a dozen civs and really had to focus on that alone.
One disappointing aspect was that only one civ took up Confucian as their state religion although many civs had it in all their cities when I checked later, they preferred Hinduism which was very sparse in my cities, probably why I ended up fighting so many. With the capture of Moscow with 5 wonders (Stalin was busy) and Solomons temple I could tech well which saved me along with buying off the stronges rival with Astronomy. Attacked and took cities from him later though when he was in an allout war with about 4 other civs.
But the success of the very early shrine in spreading the religion without effort is amazing.
