Yeah... In SP, I start in Slavery, and then move to CS when I'm past the point of using much whipping, and try to stay in it as long as I can. Eventually, like you say, you get driven to Emancipation, but I try to hold off as long as I can if I'm in Rep. The good news is, by that time, you've built enough buildings that having options for specialists isn't really a problem.
