Fortunately I get the oracle in a majority of our MP games so we don't have to worry about that

    But Damn.

Of course since we play no tech trading, checking out saves every so often around the build will show if someones cheating, without a doubt.

Yeah... I hope you are right. The last time I built Oracle in a recent SP game after reading the link, I gave it a try and it does indeed work like a charm. SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It really sucks. Up until now, I felt really good about how the MP games were handled, now...

Cheat! CHEAT! CHEAT! But one only the player can do in SP.

I frankly don't care how people play SP games... If they want to cheat to have "fun", all power to them. That is the point of a "game"

But man, this sure puts the brakes on MP games with strangers. Sigh...

IN SP, no problem, world builder works for that already.

I will admit this weekend in one game when I didn't get oracle that I thought about this for a sec.

CS also requires Math in BtS, so CS slingshot with Oracle doesn't work so well anymore.

But Feudalism is still quite in reach, and that's a tech the AI rarely trades.

Early Feud can be great if you are protective. Having a stack of Long bowmen on the board early is almost unstopable.

Even more fun if you're the NA.

Yeah... the NA's can REALLY take advantage of that strategy. On the other hand, if you are the Chinese, you might want to use it to take the highest cost science that gets you Machinery. Their UU can be killer early, killing melee units, defending well, and causing collateral damage. A stack of them is really nasty early.

For the first time since BTW came out I've reinstalled Civ4 and have started playing it again. If I get the oracle, and I seldom do since I only play MP, I always go for metal casting because it is expansive and has a big pay off. Plus in MP everyone always has tech trading turned off (which is stupid unless you're playing on a ladder).

Why not trade among you at your own risk? Or is cooperative teching not allowed except with teams?

Correct. In our early MP games a couple of people would cooperate and quickly unbalance the game. In other games, one civ would tech while the other would build units and they'd trade units for techs. Again, balance issues, especially when it involved UUs. Trading cities back and forth etc. It just took a lot of fun out of the game so we use settings and gentlemen agreements to try to keep it from 2-1 or 3-1. It can still happen but it's not an everyday occurance.

Because it is part of the game and people should live with it. In real life if someone goes all Hitler and tries to conquer the world then everyone would do everything, including giving techs, in order to stop them. Thus it is lame.

From my experience tech trading in mp games has always led to unbalanced games, so to maximize odds of enjoyment, it must be turned off totally. Where i am going to be building a shrine I will grab currency with the Oracle, this is usually when I have already built stonehenge and have a religion already or fairly sure to get it soon. A shrine and marketplace rushed gives very good returns for the effort.
