Why is there an assumption that I have to have a "sissy" military when I run Pacifism?

Isn't the size of my military totally up to me?

Let's say you have 10 cities, and that vassalage gives you 16 maintenance-free units. Let's say you were running Org Religion (high) and switch to pacifism (none), and the switch saves you 30 gold.

That's 46 units right there, at no change in your maintenance costs. 2 defenders per city (with walls) and a 26 unit response force. If you build it right and use it right it'll stop SOD's twice it's size.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Recently, I've been picking up Civ again - and having difficulty on prince. Never really explored the specialists route - so I'm inspired to launch a SE economy with Amphibious Shock Elephants army. Clearly my armies have been too small and I've spent too much civ time digging my civ out of a hole - usually unsuccessfully.

Thanks for all these great suggestions and strategies.

Yesterday I played MP and ran ~20% science most of the game. An early war with Boudica that captured a city but fell short of it's goal of elimination, plus a little too much early expansion hurt... but I got the Pyramids and enough libraries so 1-2 scientists per city allowed for excellent research. My buddies couldn't figure out how I zipped from near bottom to the top in score!

With the right wonders, a Specialist economy is definitely the way to go. You also often get more GPP that way, too.
