      My instinct is to build a bunch of cities to get the resources and strategic position. The designers specifically discourage this approach with the maintenance rules. So, I go more slowly on the expansion, then conquer for those same goals. There is a clear logic there, but it takes time to learn, This is why Financial is the most popular trait. Organized is also quite useful in this vein.

        I'd describe all previous civ games as having the following patern that was all linear:

        Explore -> Expand -> Build -> Conquer

        Often building wouldn't even start until there was almost nowhere left to expand to.

        What Civ 4 Mainteance rules turned the game into was multiple cycles.

        There's now multiple cycles. One expample being:

        Explore -> Expand -> Build -> Expand -> Build -> Expand -> Build -> Expand -> Build -> Conquer -> Build -> Expand -> Build -> Conquer.

            This sounds like a mantra for offensive linemen at the college and pro level.

              My games tend to follow the pattern of

              Conquer -> Conquer -> Build -> Build -> Build -> Expand -> Conquer -> Conquer -> Conquer.

                  By the way,

                  I experimented with "no brokering" for the first time.

                  Good lord!!! It was my second prince game to completion, and absopositivolutly trounced the ai.

                  My final opponent had flight.

                  I had future tech 4.

                  For me, no brokering makes sense, as my opponents tend to keep their discoveries in "the red" while demanding every tech I discover.

                  Going to go up another difficulty level for my next game

                              I go back to the fifties and actually remember a time when television was not available in the small town in Wyoming where I was raised. Of course I was 5 or 6 then, but nonetheless, no TV.
