That's interesting because I play with vassals on and in my current game there have been two defensive pacts (in addition to the implied ones from vassalization).
Both of them involved the Arab AI.

Templar Science Minister
AI: I sure wish Jon would hurry up and complete his turn, he's been at it for over 1,200,000 milliseconds now.

i agree with AAHZ on the way to high maintenance it seems the games you do good in is the leaders with -50 civic upkeep only. its still doable though just make sure to have banks, markets, etc oh and and butt load of cottages. as far as custom games i turn off cultural victory and if im playing BtS i turn off random events they seem to be bad way more then good.

For the record, I play at Monarch level and rarely play Organized. What level are you playing at?

Okay, you have a lot of threads to read to find what else helps with keeping costs under control. There are ways... better to not waste a leader trait.

Libraries are state sanctioned, so they're technically engaged in privateering. - Felch
I thought we're trying to have a serious discussion? It says serious in the thread title!- Al. B. Sure
Great Lighthouse/Collossus on watery maps, researching currency/code of laws earlyish, growing your cities via Hereditary Rule and working cottages, founding (or conquering) a religion and shrining the holy city, running Caste system and lots of merchant specialists. Any of the above will help put your economy on track.
