Thanks, I very rarely give a city away so wasn't sure.

GIVE A CITY AWAY!!! Alas rah, where did our training go wrong? Besides, I thought you were a multiplayer-type. I would think that environment is even more oriented toward making the other guys try and take everything that is yours. (The better for weakening them for the ultimate kill.)

On Beyond the sword Waiting to build your forbidden palace saves a bundle Depending on where Versailles is built will determine where you place Forbidden. If Versailles is on your continent then wait and build Forbidden over there. On my last game I had a two contientent game and 0 colony expenses
You can have zero colony expenses by going into state property which eliminates all distance AND colony expenses.

Which is the main reason I've never really gotten into Corporations. State Property always seems to be more attractive when I'm in a conquering mood. Which seems to be every game.

I wait until very late to build the FP. In my last big game (which I never finished) I built the FP in the northern hemisphere on the Mongol/Persian continent, long after I built Versailles. My costs dropped dramatically. Of course they dropped a lot more when I switched to State Prop.
With the Cristo wonder I'd switch out of SP to FM just long enough to build a Corp, then switch back. Just to deny it from the AI.
I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Fixed. Whoops. I don't usually build any corps, as the AI seems to spam its own to the point of economic disaster. Kind of fun to watch the greedy capitalists die, even if it really is an artifact of the programming.

Sid's Sushi is extremely useful for keeping your huge cities growing. You can get many more specialists to play around. The rest of the corporations are much less useful. Only Mining Inc (hammers) and Civilized Jewellers (cash) are even worthy of mention.

Faugh.
Cereal is huge on some maps.
On some maps you get oodles of sugar = crazy Ethanol.
If you're going for spaceship then Creative Constructions is huge. It's easy to trade for extra iron and copper, and almost every mapscript produces tons of them.
And Aluminum is useful if going for Spaceship and you don't have it: that's it's purpose, no more, no less. It is a game balancer, not a game enabler (like the others).
I find for all of them if you combo them with Hollywood and/or Rock-n-roll they really shine. The "late game resources" get massive value in trades by the AI.

I prefer Creative Constructions to Mining, Inc. by a long shot, mainly because of the culture, but also because it doesn't compete with Civilized Jewelers. It won't get you as many raw hammers as Mining, but if you aggressively acquire resources, it will push enemy borders back in no time, particularly when combined with Sid's and CivJewels. I've got a newly conquered city in my current game that will come out of revolt with 645 cpt thanks to those three corporations and the fact that its broadcast tower survived the battle. Would have been 1075 had I not switched from free speech to vassalage. It's amazing how quickly that will outmuscle an AI who has been pouring culture on the tile since axemen were scary.
Along the same lines, even if you have aluminum, AlumCo augments CreateCon by turning your coal into aluminum, a CreateCon resource. More hammers, more culture, more gooder, assuming you can pay the maintenance. I've never found much use for Standard Ethanol, but I've never been that late in the game where I either didn't have oil or needed to scrape up every last beaker I could, so I can see situations where it would be handy.
