It would be very cool if there were bunches of Religions, and the ones selected each game altered, either randomly or through certain civs picking their favorites with the select religion flag set.

    Just, you know -- pie-in-the-sky.

You should be able to modify 'home religion' in the xml files that describe the civilizations (I don't recall which one specifically, but it should be something like Civ4CivilizationInfos.xml) Or possibly the Leader info file (something like Civ4LeaderInfos.xml), I don't recall which.

All I found was religion under under movies under art under CustomAssets... But there was nothing about modifing anything or home religion.

I must admit I do feel uncomfortable as with my current game, where I'm playing Peter, and my state religion is Confucianism. It just grates on my nerves to have non-authentic elements in my game. It would be great to have ethnically authentic religions.

I think the Khazars were the only people in all of history who converted to Judaism, and that was a political move to not offend Christian and Muslim neighbours - they thought it a neutral option.

It is a great pity that the religions of the ancient West don't have an iconic name like Islam, Christianity, Buddhism etc.

One reason they have the religions they do in the game is because they picked religions that are still practiced today, that have stood the test of time. Now, there are some other religions/philosophies (taking Confuciusism into account) that could fit this bill, but Zoroastrainism and Greco-Roman polytheism don't fit the bill.
As for ethnically accurate religions, two problems spring to mind. One, many civs have been large enough/lasted long enough to have multiple ethinically accurate religions, which do you choose? Two, ITS A GAME. This has two subpoints. One, Civ is a game with historical flavor, not a simulator. Two, one of the joys of Civ is that each game is different. If each civ had the same religion every game? Boring. Does the non authenticism of the Aztecs lasting to get airplanes bother you too? What about a game where Rome and Carthage are best buds? You put to much "authenticism" in the game, and you just narrow play choices and ruin the game.

I still want to know why I always get the same religion when I try to start the game at a later era?? Can I change that (where are these options in the menu to do so)?
Does no one have an answer?

Try the "Choose Religion" advanced option, so you can pick it.

I've got no qualms about the game aspect of Civ, though I always end up with the same religion thanks to the Oracle slingshot to Code of Law, but I also like to play the huge 18 Civ Earth map and really enjoy kind of role playing. I haven't been able to bring myself to play the Incans or Aztecs yet, cause they have no authentic religion and it is just WRONG having them become Buddhist. Having Aztecs reach modern age is something I can cope with as alternate history, but having Buddha born in South America is just TOO MUCH!

There is no choose religion option! Do you have have a different or updated version of the game?

                              BTS 3.13 patch, Bhruic's Unofficial 3.13 patch.

                              From the Main Menu:
                              Single Player then
                              Custom Game then
Choose Religions from the lower middle column.

I also often pick No Vassal States, No Technology Brokering and others depending on my mood.
