How come every time I start the game at Classical or more modern, I FOUND Judaism?? Its really annoying, cuz I dont want that religion. But every single time I try to begin a game at a more enhanced era than Ancient that is what I get stuck with. I never get Buddhism or Hinduism...
Does this happen to anyone else? Is the game programmed to do that?

The civ your playing probably has it as the 'home' religion.

If you go Ghandi, you'll get Hinduism.

Will selecting the choose religion option in the custom game menu affect this, or does that option only work for religions you research? Regardless, all the religions are the same (well, except for cathedral resource, nitpickers), why does it matter which you get?

Choose religions won't affect it, but the Civ you play will.

I like variety in my faiths too, I find it dull always being the same, plus, things like Confucianism can be hard to see against a lot of map tiles making it harder to see if a city is of a faith on a glance.

Frankly, I like the more exotic religions like Taoism and Hinduism best, Christianity, Judaism et al are all a bit humdrum - I have war elephants!

The problem is that I always get the same one really, regardless.
But I also dont care for Confucianism (idk why) and Taoism (the music it plays when spreading is annoying- haha).
I like Buddhism, Christianity and Islam the best.

And this happened even when I did play as Gandhi... I will check the game menu- see if theres something to determine it there.

You may just start in ancient times and get your religion by yourself .

I understand what bothers you, i tend to choose religions by the spreading sound as well (i actually don't like the islamic sound). But i rarely play with "choose religions" active.

Where are the options to choose religion, or where can we change home religion?

I wish Judaism was replaced with one of the mythological religions of Greece, Rome or Egypt. At the very least I would rather see Zoroastrianism than Judaism.

Yeah, I mean, Judaism, and especially the hatred of it, haven't played any part in the history of the west. And as for its myths and stories and characters, only believed in by itself and 2 of the other major religioins of the world. I have no clue what the designers were thinking putting in Judaism, especially with the incredible widespread impact and knowledge of Zoroastrianism.

Judaism is already well represented through Christianity and Islam. In and of itself, Judaism has made little impact, and Zoroastrianism is at least a culturally authentic religion for pre-Islamic Persian regions.

The religions of ancient Greece/Rome/Egypt is what I really want. As a religion they are now dead, but so is the Ottoman Empire and many other aspects of Civ IV.

I totally agree with you two (Bkeela and Seedle). I do wish Zoroastrianism was in the game. Afterall, the three wise men (magi) who came to Jesus were Zoroastrian priests. And Zoroastrianism was a dual-theist religion, leading the way to Monotheism. Plus, furthermore, Zoroaster is born in the game- but not the religion??

And when I thought about it- no civilization within the game would even have Judaism as its home religion.

What would you call the Greek/Roman religion? I thought maybe those were considered under Paganism???

In future CiV, the Religions could certainly morph over time.

For Example: Celts start with Druidism, in middle ages could select/revolt to a different religion like Christianity.
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

Greek/Roman would be polytheist, not necessarily pagan (though Pagan is what christians would call them, certainly). Pagan is a relatively broad-meaning term that can encompass a lot of things...

You should be able to modify 'home religion' in the xml files that describe the civilizations (I don't recall which one specifically, but it should be something like Civ4CivilizationInfos.xml) Or possibly the Leader info file (something like Civ4LeaderInfos.xml), I don't recall which. One of the two. You could easily add Zoroastrianism instead of Judaism, if you didn't mind using the star of David as the icon (by editing the religion xml and text xmls).
