Why would you take Ragnar or Hannibal, on a map were you are on your tiny island without anyone at range to invade ? Even charismatic doesn't seem to be a that good choice, since what you will need is health, much more then happyness.
Why is health an issue more than happiness. As a general rule, I find health is rarely an issue and even if you breach limits, it does not cost much

There are more ways to add happiness than health.

You lack freshwater, so basicly you got -2 health evrywhere. And i agree with wodan's comment.

In the early game there are a lot more ways to add health.

Besides, unhealthiness is nowhere near as serious a problem as unhappiness.

            What's "early" mean?

And, why aren't we concerned with the middle or late game?

Also, I think we should qualify the discussion... happiness is more of an issue if you're using Slavery. But it goes the other way too... health is more of an issue if you chop heavily, etc.

Health is a problem after "steel" over all. In theese times you get massive happyness boosts, but have to wait for medecine for the first health boost.

The offset for freshwater in Archipelago maps – although I’d be surprised if there was absolutely none – is that almost every city is coastal. This means that mid-game, they all have extra health from the harbour.

Late-game, if you are worrying about health, you’re probably micro-managing too much. I admit to being guilty of this myself but, to be honest, -1f should not be worrying anyone at this stage. But -2f in the early game should be a MAJOR concern.

I'd go for Darius I of The Netherlands.

The Netherlands because of that awesome UB. On sea maps it seems to own any other UB hands down. Though it does come a bit late. So I agree that Carthage is also a good choice.

For leaders. Well, what traits do we need on a huge sea map? Financial seems very good, it's always good, but on sea it's even better. And it synergizes nicely with the ****. And organized seems very useful. So that brings us to Darius I.

I'm not a big fan of Industrious myself. The 50% wonder production just doesn't do enough. Though on a low hammer map, maybe it's useful. Anyway Huayna Capac is certainly not a bad choice.

As for Wilhelm of Orange. Yeah, that would be my second choice. Creative is very useful to quickly pop boundaries. For some reason this is always even more useful on water maps. Perhaps because cities are further away on average and religions don't spread as well.
