  • City placement with overlap?

    Hi,

In a game I just started I am wondering about the following:

    1) Is there anything that suggests that I should not put a city in the marked tile? It will overlap with Constantinople, but with 2 fish I could run a number of specialists there instead of working tiles, right?

    2) I am playing on Prince (Large/Pangea/Normal) with for the first time Aggressive AI. Should I expand inwards first and come back to the marked tile for perhaps my 4th city?

    Thanks!

In such a case I'd be extremely lame and start anew. Haven't made up my mind yet whether such overlap is worth it to get resources within the city radius.

In any case I'd expand elsewhere and only settle at the tile if there aren't any other good locations left.

Keep in mind that the overlapping tiles are not really awesome tiles, so it will just affect your city at 18 pop and more...

I would most certainly plant a city there. The cost of a couple of overlapping tiles is nothing compared to the cost of not utilising a resource.

I also read here that if you plan on running specialists then it is good play to overlap in many cases. This sounds pretty logical to me.

But as mentioned in this thread, come back for it later. Expand outward first.

It's a rare game when I don't have cities with overlapping radii. Your fishing village is definitely a "backfill" location, but it's well worth settling once you have grabbed your initial territory and gotten some economy online.

I would have looked inwards first to see if there are some better locations there. That one, I'd wait with anyway. You could use those two fish resources as fuel for slavery building, besides that the city will have little production.

You could put a city where the warrior is. You'd get one fish and also a plans hill for some production.

You can certainly place it there. For me, as long as each city can work the eight adjoining squares it's OK.

It won't grow to a huge city, but you could build Moai Statues there. Grab the plains hill with another city. Get your Warrior onto the hill to see what's around.

I would not only found a city in the marked spot, I would send my first settler there; two fish to support specalists. I would also build Moi Statues there and unless it becomes a religious shrine Oxford's as well.

                    Place the city there. It's a no-brainer.
You can't place your capital in a better position either.

That corner has Moai Statues written all over it. You can even afford to chop a forest, no problem.

The only question is when to settle it. I like to try and drop my first settler or two in spots where they can block off AI expansion. Or in spots with really nice resources (gold, gems), if I find 'em. So that seaport would probably be about 3rd or 4th on my list of spots to settle. No rush, since the competition ain't gonna be able to settle there, and Sailing isn't usually a Top 5 Tech.

But if the scouts find a whole lot of nothing nearby? Yeah, that might even be your best spot for that first settler.

Yeah I'd Maoi that one. The capitol to whip like crazy, add Globe, and later on maybe use nationalism to draft.

That's a really strong start location. Settle it, but later. Find a spot you can settle that marks out your territory first, but deffo come back to take that spot.

I love your little screen shot caption.

id settle it as my 2nd or third city. once you have workboats on the fish, you can easily build any of the early structures you need there just through slavery. you could slave out an army there in no time as well.

You need to find out more of the map to figure out where to place your second city. From what I can see, the better spot would be the desert tile but you need to see what is over that hill and to the east of your capital.
