    And GS is Great Scientist

Yes, I have problems with all the abbreviations myself. Some posts are spawned with them even using the same abbreviation for different subjects. This makes it sometimes impossible to understand the text. If you ask me, use of abbreviations should be limited.

My apologies. I thought these were commonly used and recognized abbreviationgs but you are correct; For clarity we should be using the real names of things. Either way, answers seem to have come fast and both Theban and MoonWolf are right on.

I think the first time an abbreviation is used in a post it should be defined, then the abbreviation can be used for further references.

ex. Settle your GS (Great Scientist) to get an academy, use subsequent GS to lightbulb tech.

Not all cities will be so specialized, but they are generally more powerful if they are.
How do you label cities? Or are you just changing the city's name?

          Anyway, this sounds quite useful.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Yes, exactly. Sorry to take so long getting back here.

I find that it helps with my planning if I know which city is doing what before I settle them. It's also handy later in the game when I get distracted and forget the city's purpose.

Ah, now I think I understand the advantages of a caste SE. This also makes libraries higher on the build list!

                        Thanks!

                          Hi Hydro!
Glad to find another SMAC lover of old around here.

I daresay you might find CIV deeper and surely more challenging than SMAC (though still not nearly as evoking).

I suggest trying several leaders and strategies (the Incans for instance are fun, but quite frankly a bit overpowered), even the ones you'd think would bore you. The game surely has a lot to offer.
Recently I've experimented with variations of Obsolete's Wonder (and priests) Economy, and it's been a blast.

bah, all this overexpansion is overrated. my monarch wins have mostly been when I've stayed small, 4-5 cities (on a standard size map), fairly specialized, constructing lots of wonders and specialists and enough defences to stay alive. I compete or lead in tech until the AI start catching up around middle ages, then I throw together an army and conquer myself a sufficiently large empire. doesn't always work though...

Diplo Mongolia has a good point. Another way to proceed is to gain a tech lead and then use an advanced army to conquer when you can afford it. Your AI opponents will build plenty of cottages for you, overbuild actually. This strategy requires both patience and a very high number of troops/walls/castles per city to avoid the AI "reading" the power graph and devourinmg your tasty little civ before you are ready to march.
