I thought you were supposed to use those accounts only on the Diplogame forum?

Anyways, a specialist economy does indeed take up less space and is less affected by surrounding terrain (save for food resources) than a cottage economy which in turn requires lots of good land in order to make good use of it. Therein lies the greatness of the game, you can achieve similar results with a variety of ways.

And if you do decide to go with a Specialist economy and run the Caste civic, build the Pyramids and switch to Representation so that all those specialists each generate an extra 3 beakers of science.

Glad to find another SMAC lover of old around here.

I daresay you might find CIV deeper and surely more challenging than SMAC (though still not nearly as evoking).

I suggest trying several leaders and strategies (the Incans for instance are fun, but quite frankly a bit overpowered), even the ones you'd think would bore you. The game surely has a lot to offer.
Recently I've experimented with variations of Obsolete's Wonder (and priests) Economy, and it's been a blast.
Deeper? In terms of game play perhaps. But that isn't surprising since SMAC is a 1999 era game, and even then it was a dolled up Civ2 (with all of its limitations) with a few very good ideas thrown in.

What I do find is that I don't care a whit about any leader or race. They are simply faces on stats. There is no personality, to me at least.

Challenge? Yes. Inspiration? None at all.
