Then slave out the granary for 2 pop, or chop the forests for it after slaving out a worker...also, marathon sucks. Normal speed

HAH! slave = lost food = lost specialist = cant run caste system = no GP points.

I chopped out the pyramids and library, so the forests where kaput by then.

Marathon > any other speed. Specially for a warmonger like me.

Interesting... When I try to load the save, I've got this:

If I hit ok, the game crashes to desktop...

I've seen something very similar before, but I can't recall exactly what or when... MP games, maybe? Administrative passwords or something like that...

Surely one of you, smart guys, can help…

You don;t have to run a specialist economy. IN fact most of the time it is better to run a cottage economy, as demonstrated by the fact you have to kep on regenerating the map to get a good start so you can run an SE.

Actually the better you are at warmongering, the easier it is to warmonger at faster speeds. Warmongering at Marathon isn;t a challenge, you should try doing so at quick at the same difficulty.

Not a chalange? You obviosly arent playing my current german philo game... better food start and its Panzers vs cavalry/artillery (some rifles some infantry), and I'm still in danger of loosing. The Numbers that the AI's generate on marathon is mindblowing. And thats why I love it.

Not to mention I'm a lonely confucian state in a sea of the jewish. The whole game has been a fight to survive.

Now dont get me wrong, I dont always run a specialist economy, Usually its cottage spammage. But even towns dont creat much in the way of hammers. I wanted to keep all my forests and be able to crank Jannissaries when available.

Actually I find that the terrain in the rest of my empire is much more determinant to whether I can run a SE or whether I can run a CE, than the terrain around a single one of my cities (even the capitol).

Nice try, but for the majority of the time 1 city isn't going to win you the game.

That one city gave me panzers vs rifles this time around. Without that I'd been dead meat. So yes, this time it won the game. The rest of my empire spammed cottages of course, but playing philo usually gives me such a huge tech advantage that I stopped playing philo for a while.

edit: shouldnt say spammed, generally my cities had 4 commerce squares each, until environmentalism, then all the extra windmills changed that.

Yeah, pretty much, but (generally) a SE is for when you have an (over)abundance of food and a CE is for when you don't. I'm pretty sure that most of the time when I play I get some pretty crappy land and a SE isn't possible, or I don't have stone and am unable to get the Pyramids without stifling growth too much, which weakens the SE.

Krills right (I think), a slaved granary will pay itself back the population in a very short time period and then reward you more following that period.
I remember reading somewhere, I think it was in one of Blake's threads, "Always slave granaries".

Im currently playing a pitboss game as pacal (expansionist and cheep granaries). Slaving a granary for 1 pop is oh so nice!

It's probably because you played it 'locked modified assets', probably. Don't use that option for any reason as a single user (the only reason is for tournament or DG play where security is important).

So you got all of the scientists for free in that city? OR you got other cities to make some of the scientists?

Fact of the matter is that yopu teched all the way to CS and you have 4 cities, whereas if you warred earlier, expanded earlier, and generally were more aggressive earlier, you could have taken control of the game alot sooner instead of letting the AI have their way. Rush, choke, kill, maim, destroy, pillage, burn etc. The pyramids are 500 hammer on Normal, that is alot of units, hell, that's a good 3 cities from an AI or maybe the entirety of the AI if you play it right.

Choices, what makes this game great.

As far as going on the war path instead of the early 40+ turns of pyramids. I believe in the longer run, pyramids would have been worth MORE than 4 more cities. Simply because of city maintenance costs before you have the infrastructure to support it is crippling. I expand in incraments. As my infrastructure comes online, and I'm able to afford it. Then late game Its a run for victory with a great advantage. Im sure I wont play this german game out, as I'm just too far ahead, once the massive world war is decided.

As far as superspecialists, I think I had 3 (not including generals, wich there were a lot of) pop in a 'sub city'. My capital cranked them out at such a great rate no other cities could keep up. I had built the national park in one city, that gave me 6 free specialists, and it NEVER popped a SS.
