I'm always paranoid about losing Liberalism to the AI so I always try to beeline for it at the expense of beelining towards other things so I usually end up getting stuff like printing press or gunpowder.

I play at Monarch level, large/huge maps with many AI opponents so there's at least on eof 'em contesting me for Liberalism and/or Economics. therefore I normally aim for Liberalism and pick Economics as my freebie.

That's why I like to have espionage on my opponents, I can see what they are researching and I know when I need to go after Economics, Liberalism, and Physics.

Anyway, i think the best to do with liberalism is to get either constitution or democracy. With a bit luck you finish Taj Mahal by that time, and may get all your civic changes done during that golden age.

I played and OCC game today and when I got liberalism it turned out I could get hunting for it. I was tempted to do it, just to show I could :P

I can remember once having a lot of time to get Liberalism but I don’t know if I managed to get Assembly Line with it on Emperor. I suspect it was probably too much of an ask but might try and see if I can find the game to work out if I had to settle for something like Steam Power.

Assembly Line is a lot further up the tree requiring Nationalism, Constitution, Economics and Corporation. In fact, I suspect Communism is easier than Steam Power because you can probably get there even without Gunpowder.
