Indeed! I would love to have a little write up on how you developed your little kingdom to be doing so well in research. While I was almost even with the AIs at that point in the game I was never able to get ahead and applaud you for getting there.

At the same time you are right at the point where the AIs will really start to get their economies going and might be about to fall behind in research. I would really like to see what happens to you in the next 1,000 years.

Yeh my problem is, that early to mid game, monarch is perfect. Emporer makes it so much MORE difficult to get through the early gunpowder era, but if I survive that, as in my last emporer ghandi game, my industrialization blows all the ai's out in tech (although I almost lost that game because Huyana was going for a culture win and I didnt realize until his second city reached max... I had a mere 10 turns to take him out before his 3rd would have popped. I had 28 turns to land my spaceship.)

Good thing his capital was coastal...

Burned it to the ground (along with many wonders!)

              A few pointers about research:

              - GP (great scientists mostly) are vital. The early gp point - beaker ratio is very cost effective. At 350AD, Im halfway thru my 7th GP, not counting the GM from Economics.

              - Capital is the main source of beakers in a small empire, so grow it large and build academy and all research buildings in it, including any monastery you can

              - I got the Mids, so I run Representation with lots of specialists. Without the Mids capital could use a few cottaged tiles (but just a few because it is the only good GP farm in this empire) and obviously Monarchy for happy cap

              - I didn't overspend on 1) military 2) cities. They are very expensive (in terms of maintenance) on deity, especially military. It's best to defend with diplomacy, so I frequently bribe aggressive AIs to war (Shaka, for instance) to keep them off my back

I notice you have no settled scientists... are you lightbulbing them all? Oh thats gonna kill you late game I think.

In the long run, settled scientists outweigh lightbulbing.

                  In strictly math terms, probably.

In gamist terms, they don't. Bulbing the techs lets me trade for other techs with the AIs, reach milestones like Liberalism first, and even less quanifiable by beaker math, bulbing lets me manipulate diplomacy by war bribes and diplo bonuses for fair trade relations and shared techology advances.

                    Well here we go...

Got a couple worker techs then headed towards Code of Laws. Build a single settler to settle the gold squares. Finished the oracle same turn as writing for the freebie. Started teching bronze working and chopped out the pyramids.

Built a couple more settlers to fill the peninsula, then settled in to tech my way towards liberalism. I had chosen NOT to accept any religions to keep everyone happy.

Once I had Liberalism I switched to free religion from paganism and traded for every tech possible. At some point the whole continent declared war on Huyana so I joined in, just to keep everyone happy. No fighting happened but I gained some good happy points from it.

Kept right on teching as best as possible towards communism.

Shortly after I entered a defensive pact with the chinese, pacal declared war. Isabella joined in on our side (must have also had a DP with china) and a couple turns later Communism finished.

Pacal captured a chinese city, but I was able to retake it quickly, then declared peace.

This left me in a position where I had assembly line, and was mere turns from industrialism. So I attacked Gilgamesh (TANKS VS RIFLES on DIETY! YAY!) and captured his 3 southern cities. Vassalized the remainder.

This is where I left off, Pacal is goin down next and we'll see what happens then.

                      • He wasnt kidding when he said maintenance costs hurt on diety. Those 3 cities would have killed my tech generating ability if it wasnt for china. Quin had been spreading mining inc, and was raking in the $$ so I asked for 100g per turn, wich saved my bacon.

For anyone who was wondering... my original plan was to ally with issabella, however "she didnt like me enough" and I had no cities with christianity to fix that. However quin had both mining inc AND the pentagon, so he's probably better for going for a domination win.

Pacal controls the electricity wonders, and if i can take him down before he gets tanks I should be set up well to beat down the rest.

I think I'm going to have to just begin cranking nothing but units, and thus change civics as soon as radio finishes... Hopefully I can do enough damage before bombers and tanks become obsolete.

                            • Here's a look at the cap.

So I moved on pacal, he had armor, but very few of them, it was just a matter of killing off his hordes of infantry, 1 city at a time.

I gifted all of the cities to Quin, since he gets bonuses that I dont, I figured we'd be better serviced if he had them.

Afterwards I repositioned and hit germany. Now I'm in trouble, he's a vassal of issabella and she has choppers and mobile artillery. Many of my bombers get knocked from the sky by her jets, and she has shaka join the war against me. It's looking bad, but I manage to take 2 german cities and shaka looses 2. I accept peace with izzy and vassalize shaka, leaving me at this point tonight.

Tomarow I shall hit korea, and possibly win on diety!
