The whole continent's not revealed yet. I'd scout to the north asap AAHZ.

Most mapscripts that I've seen determine the # of distinct happy resources by the # of players on that continent. So I'd bet there is some nice territory up there.

There'd better be, but I got the impression that Fleme had taken a peak at the continent by downloading the save and declared it to be more of the same.

I actually tried a few games of Monarch with similar settings with Togugawa. Lost every single one of them. Heh.

I'm not giving up until I bag that win.

And yeah, the island you got is the most wretched piece of land I've seen this far.

Well AAHZ, you are braver than me. I would have regenerated the minute I started scouting. Good luck but this seems like a lost cause.

This game is pretty tough - I am not used to marathon for one and not sure where I should be at, but the barbs realy make things hard. Aahz, one thing you should do is clear that map area - get a few chariots with the visibility promotion out ASAP and clear the fog, and keep the sentries out there; it will prevent barbs from appearing (they appear in proportion to the quantity of unseen territory aka fog, and can't pop in seen territory). There's at least one pretty good city spot in the NE, though I had to rely on a random gold pop to get a happy resource...

something like this could make for a really intresting AU course. isolated start, leader with combat-centric traits, no happiness resources.. it'd be quite the challenge. i'd try this one but theres no way im playing Huge/Marathon, it just takes way too long.

Interesting. Looks like a good start.

I'm not sure I would have put Tokyo right there, though. One square down and to the right, you still get the sheep resouces, you still get ocean access, and you don't get all those terrible tundra and mountain squares.

                        couple of other gameplay points-
running representation is not an optimal choice, you dont have much food so you won't be running many specialists. the +2 happy is ok, but you're better off with hereditary rule.

you're not industrious and dont have stone, but built the pyramids- thats a huge time investment of dubious value. it'll be helpful to run HR and the great engineers might be helpful for some more wonders. on the other hand it might have been a better idea to grab the marbles and build a wonder that will get you a great prophet (so you can lightbulb theocracy and get a religion, once again to help with the happiness issue).

Indeed, this is what I did (there's a second sheep that you get as a result, in fact, and the hills E of that sheep gave me a gold after about 150 turns).

Snoopy, are you referring to Kyoto? I don't see a second sheep anywhere near Tokyo...

Ah, indeed. I actually settled a city one SW of the iron; I'll settle another up where Aahz' Tokyo is eventually (when I can afford it... 98 turns to Currency at this point, darn game).
