  • BtS Bug Report: New Colonies / Motherland Issue

I have experienced a particular bug in almost every Multiplayer game I have played, and I haven't seen any threads about it yet... I am playing with the latest patch of BtS... So here is the issue:

Say I start a game with 15 Civs...

Eventually a few of them get destroyed over the course of the game, by me. Of course I took all the cities so that the people don't want to join their old motherland...

Then unexpectedly a few thousand years later, someone on the other side of the planet declares a tiny colony and a new leader springs forth. Fine by me.

What I have an issue with is the fact that the cities that I took over all that time ago now wish to join the motherland. Which happens to be the NEW CIV?

I am sure that the slot that was being used by the Civ I conquered is the same slot being used by the AI for the new colony. But the new colony belongs to my enemy. It pretty much makes me have to go to war with a country for no logical reason. And conquering is great and all, but it spoils the atmosphere of belief in the world when that happens.

Is is possible to allow NEW slots to be created so that the old cities once owned by the AI of the same slot don't revolt every time a new Civ is formed?

BTW: Is there a smaller forum with bug reports on this site? or am I just missing it?

    Thanks.

I think this a known bug, which also causes some weird colony war declarations. Get Bhruic's unofficial patch from sticky thread on this forum to get rid of it for now.

In the last game I played, I started on an island and I settled my 3rd or 4th city and even though I hadn't even met any of the other civs in the game, a few turns they asked to join another civ. All I could say was WTF.

I had a game where I settled a city, and they asked to join my neighbor to the north.

I made sure to whip them into submission.

Of course after posting this, I found the bug thread... my bad...

I actually have a game going now where I conquered Isabella, and shortly thereafter granted independence to a completely different and remote island.

It became "France", ruled by Isabella, and has a picture of Napoleon, while "Isabella" is the name. And of course my entire new conquest is all revolting because they want to join my vassal.

It does make it rough. Especially because there is no way for me to take my own vassal over as far as I know. I just have to put cultural corporations in those cities...

Thanks for listening to the vent anyway.

                Granting Independence Started war

I'm playing a game on an archipelago map. It's around 1900 AD, I've already granted independence to 3 separate nations. I tried to grant independence to a 4th, but apparently I cannot exceed 18 nations in the game. Hence, I took out a small vassal state of China, thus reducing the number of civilizations back down to 17. Immediately, I granted indepence to a 4th colony and as I did so, all hell broke loose. I received a message that I had declared war on my vassal, which caused my other two vassals to declare war on my defecting vassal. Then immediately following this declaration of war my other two vassals renounced my hegemony and declared war on me. And then, to top it all off, all three of my newly defecting vassals declared war on France too (and I didn't have a defensive pact arrangement with France).

                WTF happened?

I did just install the latest patch two turns before this happened, did that somehow screw things up? Bizarre.

Same thing happened to me. My +19 vassal declared war on me when I tried to give another continent independence. There wasn't 18 civs in the game, so I'm sure that wasn't the cause.

                    So?

Is this a glitch, or something that's supposed to happen? That when you do not gift your vassal a city, he becomes petulant that you dared free someone else? The two cities I granted independence too were quite far from any of my three other vassals.

You guys have run into the Vassal bug. What happened is that the new vassal was "assigned" the same "slot" as one of the previous (dead) civs. The new vassal received all of the diplomatic history of the previous civ, with all the negative modifiers you piled up all game (you wiped them out, remember?)

If you install Bhruic's patch, this will be fixed and won't happen again.

Unfortunately, MP players have to pretty much wait for an official patch... sigh...

Bhruic's patch still didnt solve the problem

Ok, so I installed the patch, and went on to conquer the English's 3 cities (Chinese vassals) again. This time, however, when I went in to grant them independence, I was not given the option. Instead, I could only liberate them to one of my existing vassals. Why is this? Why can I not liberate them into a new vassal? Additionally, there are now 5 of my cities that are on other continents that are no longer listed as candidates for liberation. What's going on? Why can't I grant the former English cities their own civ, and why are 5 colonial cities not listed as candidates for liberation?

Bhruic's patch seemed to solve the problem by not even allowing me to grant independence.

Not really. Depends on what kind of MP you're playing. Hotseat etc would be perfectly fine as long as everybody had the patch.

Even if you determine running the patch isn't an option for the type of MP you play, you can still have multiple installs, one for SP and one for your MP games.

Actually, I'm playing SP. Is there a different patch for MP and SP?

And something funny Wodan. I was just reading one of your posts on...umh...the other site.
