I apologize if I cropped it wrongly. I think it gets the point across though.
I will, however, attempt to persevere! We'll see how far I get.

Okay, due to my being an idiot, I've had to re-attach the image here. Sorry.

Sure, except that it'll be around turn 100 before I can even begin to expand. *L* It took me almost 30 turns just to get that one Work Boat built, and THAT was only being built as a placeholder for getting Sailing so I could toss out a Galley and go looking for actual land.

All right. It's now turn 565 or so, and I've learned that despite the appearance of my position, it is in fact a blessing in disguise.
First of all, I am on an island chain between a pair of massive continents. The only other inhabitant of these continents was China, and I swept in with my Dog Soldiers and took Beijing from them before they could expand, as they too were on an island. I luckily managed to get my soldiers over there to wipe them out before they got a Galley.
I then explored the continent to my west, and discovered it was rich with dye, ivory, wheat, copper, and iron. The continent to my east, where China would've expanded given time, has (from my coastal exploration only) gems, at least, that I know of.
The problem:
All of my cities OTHER than Cahokia, my capital, are considered "on another continent". thus, I'm taking severe penalties. Luckily, I'm Financial and I've founded several rich cities near rivers (plus one city with two Dyes in its radius, for +5 gold each, woo!), and I've secured a large number of Wonders, including the Colossus, the Oracle (very useful to catch me up in the tech race), and the Pyramids (Universal Suffrage is doing me a lot of good now that I've got Towns all over the place). Throw in Caste System and Theocracy with my very own founded Judaism (spread to all my cities, and with a Great Prophet to give me the Temple of Solomon), and I'm not hurting for money anymore. I'm running at either 70% or 80% with a plus to my gold. I'm banking up a good solid chunk. Theoretically I coul swarm Settlers to the other continent and settle there, but I'm not ready to do that yet. I'm serously considering settling a dozen or so cities ther and them making them a Colony. We'll see.
Anyway, I persevered and discovered my position isn't as bad as I first thought. But I thought it was kinda hilarious to start on an island, all by myself, and wanted to post the screenie. *L*
By the by, did I mention this is Custom_Continents, Medium sea level? I shouldn't be on a friggin' island, darnit! And the fact that both I AND a computer player were BOTH isolated from our mainlands seems odd to me, but hey, it's working.
Honestly, if I hadn't been so despereate for another city, I'd've kept China around as a sparring partner to build up XP for the West Point later, but... I needed the city.

Move your capital to 1 continent and put the hidden palace on the other.
And for sticking it out. I know I'd probably have given up long ago.
I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
I just might do that, Theben, thanks. I never move my Palace, so I actually sometimes forget I can.
If I manage to get Versailles, I might even be able to colonize a third continent. Maybe. If I'm lucky.
I've got a lot of good resources though. I hope the game continues to go this smoothly. Of course, there's always the risk that I'll be facing massive fleets any time now.

Starfarer, the citizen governor pretty much always applies a citizen to an unworked food tile. In this case, since what you're building is a work boat, you should definitely manually tell it to work that grass hill. You'll crank the work boat out in 10 turns.
At that point, while you're making a 2nd work boat, change the citizen to work your now-netted clams until size 2, and then have the city work both the clams and the hill.
Repeat for the 3rd clams.
This takes some management but it is definitely preferable to the alternative, as you experienced... working a unnetted clam and taking forever to make a single work boat AND taking forever to grow the city. You got the worst of both worlds that way.
Here you go. This should be the right one. Have fun with it!
By the way, thanks, Wodan. I rarely micro my cities much, but I probably should've in this case. Mind you, the position did NOT turn out to be untenable. But it's interesting nonetheless.
One moment and I'll attach a more recent autosave for those of you who want to see how I did.
I want to mention, maybe I'm a total wuss, but I'm playing on Warlord level. I'm far from an expert on the nuts and bolts of Civ, and I generally prefer to play Warlord when I'm only playing, rather than playing to get better.
