Slightly off topic, but this thread jarred loose a memory. I liked how warships could bombard land improvements and troops. I even liked the "cratered" landscapes afterward. Why can't your navy bombard anymore?
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

i loved this feature. it made a navy something to be feared, since you could decimate an opponents commerce and population without ever landing a single trooper.

Which was why lethal bombard was so good too, as at least after flight you had a way to counter the ships bombard ability.

I used to make sure i could get artillery to any point along my coast to redline enemy ships if they were close enough to land, then sink them with a bomber.

Civ 3 conquests was a great version, civ 4 made naval very bland, though its improved with BTS a little.
