  • Lethal sea air strike

When i was playing civ3 i have been had a lot of fan exept for the first few weeks when i couldn't understand from where i could change the data in order to achieve lethal bombardment at sea. Once i achieve that asking in this forum i was very happy.

Now that i change my old pc and have in my hands civ4 bts 313 i have the same problem

I went to options and to the world builder but nothing. I can find the "units" but i can't find the way to change to lethal sea bombardment - air strike or something like that

Please help me once more after six year...

In the CIV4UnitInfos.xml file there is an item (iAirCombatLimit) for each air unit which determines how much damage it can inflict on a ground-or-air unit. It is nominally 50 (so you can inflict 50% damage).

The DESIGN PROBLEM in Civ4 is that there are not separate terms for ground and sea units. To change iAirCombatLimit to 100 would allow air units to KILL not only sea units but also ground units, and that would NOT be a good idea. Trust me.

... or not, as you wish. If you want to be able to rush to flight and have fun killing ground units with virtually no army present, ....

thx jaybe you are right about a 100% killing possibility generally but man what a pity, by no having the change to sink enemy vessels by using air force is totally unrealistic .

I would ask from the desiners of the game to redesing if possible this particulare point in order to have more realism in that and more fun too...

      Thnx again

This wolf agree with you. I also would like to have lethal bombardment of see units. In addition, I miss the reduced movement of damaged ships that we had in Civ2. Bringing these two in the game, will do naval warfare a lot more interesting (for that matter, with BTS, naval warfare has already gotten a lot better).

On the other hand if i remember well and i think i am, fighters do not cause collaterall damage. So maybe it woyldn't a bad idea if we have 100% kill for the fighters and jet fighters only until the game team find a way to fix this problem...

As for the movement penalty i didn't Know that there was such a think in civ2 and i find it a great idea not only for naval units but also for land and air units as well.

          A great idea indeed...

That's right! I didn't think of fighters, they don't have colletaral damage. I was thinking about this one e.g. how to reflect that a massive air force can stop an invading army. Like the US A10's were made to stop the 95.000 tanks that Soviet had ready to roll over Europe. There are also examples in war history of lack of air support meant annihilation of ground forces. So all-in-all, I think fighters (at least jet fighters) should give 100% damage.

In Civ2, a ship could move as little as 2 if damaged enough. I very good way to implement the fact that during WW2 damaged ships where sometimes hunted down or had to be escorted to dock for repair instead of being able to move away to safe waters for full speed.

I agree with you. Further more i would say that damage a ship beyond a particulare point e.g. 50% should meant that this vessel will be able to heall only in a dock-yard...(modern era)

one thing to keep in mind is that its not as trivial as just changing a maximum damage threshold. lethal bombardment is very powerful, and while i agree that it should be added, the problem is that if you add it yourself the AI won't know how to utilize it. this will give you a huge advantage.

Someone was doing an Air Forces module on CFC that included the an SDK mod that permitted lethal air bombardment of naval units....it was never updated to 3.13, unfortunately, but here it is if you have an interest in messing with it....

Air Force *Updated to v0.3 (sep 15, 2007)* Inspired by TheLopez air forces mod, it includes more air promotions, 6 new unit types, and 60+ planes for diversity. And pedia entry are filled (english text mostly). On above picture, you can see from left to right : Fighter, light...

actually now in BTS you can if you use cruise missilles. but to save on cruise missiles you would need a few planes to get it to 50%

Last night i tried to change iAirCombatLimit to 100 at least for the fighters but i didn't because i couldn't find where to go.

May anyone help, me step by step where to go and what menu i have to use to change the limit?

And yes AI would be an easy pray after that but i want to try it after all

It is in the XML ... CIV4UnitInfos.xml which is in the /assets/xml/units/ folder (or whatever the unit-related folder is). You have to go to each air unit (or each fighter, or whatever) and change it to 100. Make sure to back up the file so that if you ever want to play MP or a TLT game, you can...

Road to War has a port bombing mission. Whilst only able to perform the mission in ports, it also has a chance of sinking ships not just damaging them.

I'm currently splitting the bombing missions out into their own mod, so keep an eye on the Creation forum.

I went there but i can't change it to 100% it doesn't take the data and i can't change anything either. Is it locked?

What program have you opened the xml-file in? I know some webbrowsers (like internet explorer ) opens these files and only displays them. Try to open the file in e.g. notepad and then you can edit it. I've done this change myself for the jetfighters, works fine Or you can download Dale's mod. Haven't tried the bomber and fighter, but the stealth bombers and jet fighters have lehtal bombing.
