I suppose it also depends on how 'random' is defined, also. Is it random leader, or random civ and then random leader? For a one-leader civ like the Khmer, it would be more likely to come up if it were the latter...

i vary map types, but generally i play large or standard. aggressive AI is for the hardcore player so I use that. i tend to play epics.

when I get more system power with a new machine (now postponed indefinetileyely) I'll likely play mostly huge maps on marathon.

I was thinking "random leader" (sorry, i did say civ, tho) and that there were 52 (i think thats a fantastic variety btw) of them in the game...

            - Emperor
            - Large map with High seas
            - Epic
            - 11-14 civs
            - 2-3 continents or pangea with normal islands
            - NO tech brokering except ones that you actually researched
            - No space race victory
            - I always choose Egypt, HRE, Byzantines as opponents because I like their music, as well as the Japonese, Aztec and Zulu to slow down the tech pace and have some solid war mongering. I also like to choose Ethiopia and Khmer and sometimes Mali if I want to have a strong ally during the game that might give me a tech or two for free.

One thing I wonder, since in standard maps the techs advance fwd so fast, have people felt that standard maps with marathon speed to be a good pace to play at?

I typically play(ed) standard maps and added 1-2 extra AI's. If I wanted more land, I tended to go with low seas. But adding additional AI's is the main thing I find to improve enjoyability, for me.

Does difficulty level effect the resources around your capital?

My last 4-5 monarch-emperor games Ive had very little. I just played a noble to test a map setup for an upcoming multi game and was amazed with the increase in capital local resources.. probably just luck though?

No, I don't think so, although I haven't really played below emperor. I have some starts where I've gotten flood plains, iron two other resources and plains hills and others where I am in the forest/jungle surrounded by dye. I know its not the coolest thing, but whenever I start, I check the world builder to make sure I'm not stuck on a lone continent or in the jungle or tundra. I also agree with Blake about having the multiple AI's. The more the funner.

One question, does anyone know if there's a setting to make the world have an uninhabited continent to be later colonized?

very true, but adding too many makes the game a lot less challenging. i think +1-2 on standard is ideal.

                        terra maps do precisely that.

                        my settings-
                        monarch
                        fractal
                        standard
                        epic
                        +1-2 civs
                        no tech brokering always
raging barbs most of the time
                        agressive AI sometimes
                        all victory conditions

I've finally moved up to Prince after blowing out the AI on Noble.

I'm trying the different map types.
I choose a random civ but if I get an agreessive one I restart.

I also quickly restart if it turns out my local area of the map does not complement my traights.

VonShama , I think that is classicly the "Terra" map in Civ IV. Occansionly though it ends up too close to the main mass and able to be colonized with Galleys.

Also sometimes the other world scripts by accident leave a fairly large landmass uninhabited that can't be reached until Astronomy.

But note that any landmass that's uncolonized for too long ends up with barbs.
