    That and Praetorians................

    I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

      Egyptian War Chariots should not be underestimated.
      Janissary's are great to conquer weaker nations.
      Redcoats (especially under churchill) beat up stuff.

      imo Praetorians are overrated. some catapults and axemen will waste them.

        Fast Worker and Skirmisher are the most useful, in my opinion. Praetorians are boring and overrated.

            skirmisher is too early for me. I'm never ready to wage war that early. How can anyone handle the maintenance costs? Maybe if you only conquer one city... But I like to conquer lots of cities. I find conquering one city doesn't put them back far enough, and put me ahead far enough.

            Same goes with the Quecha (sp?)

              Quencha's are excellent on small or crowded maps.

              They also make quite nice "pillaging" units - but they are toast once everyone gets axes.

              However plant a small stack of them on your neighbour's only copper supply - and they can really hold them back for a while.

                I would disagree.

                No they are not supermen, but considering the time period you get them, and the relatively low cost, they are pretty good in my book.

                And yes - you do need a mixed arms force - like any unit they have an opposing unit they are weak against.

                All in all though - they are a stong unit.

                  I used Portugese carracks to launch an early invasion on another continent. They were surprisingly useful, available well before galleons.

                  Overall I would still say the Fast Worker is best.

                    Yes.. the Carracks can be a powerful unit on an island map.

                    A stack of 5 to 10 Prateorians early in the game will waste anything. This can be done long before cats.

                    And while axeman can be effective, you need a lot of them to take out an early Prateorian rush.

                        Landsknechts. Murdering everything except archery units. Combine with a stack of trebuchets and mow everyone down before gunpowder.

                          Mongolian Keshik is nice. I had a really good game where I rushed for Horseback Riding and went on a rampage on my neighbors. The immortal are also nice for this. I haven't gotten around to playing with the Egyptians so I wouldn't know about the War Chariots.

                          Also the Praetorians already mentioned here are always nice. When playing Terra or Hemispheres the Carrack is really nice.

                            The AI does not know how to counter an early (before 1000BC at epic speed) Praetorian rush.

                            In the Warlord version with that monstrous Creative-Organized Augustus, I routinely cleaned up 3 AI civs before 0AD on Pangea Maps.

                            In the non Agressive-AI version of BTS, I had the earliest ever Conquest victory before 1200AD with Julius Caesar.

                              Which UU is the best heavily depends on the type of maps:

                              On Pangea, Praetorian rules;

                              The larger the map, the more important late stage units get;

                              The more water the map has, the more important late stage units.

                              On Archipelagos, Navy SEALs are absolutely more preferable than Praetorians.

                                On Archipelagos, the East Indianman is pretty good as well. With their additional cargo space, their ability to explore rival territory, and their strength of 6, they can be real killers.
