Am I overbuilding walls & castles? I'm primarily a builder (even when I try to be more war focused... I usually end up going back to my core play-style/enjoyment). I figure the Power factor of walls and eventually castles keeps the AI off my back. Assuming you have stone, they aren't that costly AND have no recurring maintenance cost like military units might.

Plus, for a while at least, castles give extra trade routes and espionage points.

Oh and of course, if the AI -does- come after me, the defensive improvement is nice. But I always try to have enough of a military to forestall that.

      I learned something, too. . .

Edit: Oh for the love of GOD I hate when it doesn't recognize me clicking into the window and thinks I just want to hit "post".

      Me.

Hum, maybe I should actually add Walls to my city queues then just to help keep the peace early on if defenses from culture aren't.

I would guess though that these get removed from the calculations when they become obsolete and so Castles would have just as short a power graph affect as they do a defensive & economic one.

Actually, I don't think the defensive bonuses from walls and castle ever become obsolete.

Gunpowder units ignore city walls / castles.
The tech allowing castles is very close to Gunpowder.

In addition, the economic affects of castles / Spanish Citadul expire with Economics and the Celtic milittary bonsues in their Dun expires with Rifling.

But the primary reason I've avoided walls is I make culture enough of a prirority to where by the time a war breaks out most of my cities are already at 60% culture.

Whoa, thanks Wodan. I rarely build walls and castles, but now will give them more thought.

No they don't. This is mentioned very clearly in the Civilopedia. However, once Gunpowder is researched they effectively do become obsolete since gunpowder units ignore the defensive bonuses Walls and Castles provide. However you still get the benefit of the power rating.

Is a nice little trick this one.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

This isn't quite right. It only depends on what units your enemy attacks you with. It doesn't matter if YOU know gunpowder. And, it doesn't even matter if your enemy knows gunpowder... if he didn't upgrade his units, then the defensive bonus still applies.
