  • Great Wall

My first post, though I've been helped tremendously by the forums. I've been a CivFanactic since Civ I in the 1980s.

My question regards the Great Wall. If I build it early, does it expand as my territory expands? javascript:smilie('')

Nope, the graphic wall on the map remains where it is. The benefits apply wherever your border is, however.
A ship at sea is its own world. To be the captain of a ship is to be the unquestioned ruler of that world and requires all of the leadership skills of a prince or minister.

And note that this only applies to land, barbarian galleys still move through your boundries no problem.

As others have said, while the wall graphics do not expand with your empire, the effects do.

          No need to swear now..............

And yes - the graphice does not expand (though it would be nice if it did), but the effect do........

All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

I'm very much against the idea of the great wall moving. That would be a wonder indeed!!!

I personally think it should move graphically - for it not to move yet still have effect on it's "outer side" seems silly to me.

Either way - is strange though..........

Great Wall is kinda weird if you're playing Archipelago. If your continent isn't too big, you might have one tile walled on one side, and a couple on the other.

Certain wonders seem to be stand-ins for certain philosophies or areas of expertise. For example, when you circumnavigate the world, I see this as the real-life equivalent to this civilization having a "philosophy" of exploration, or a specialization of sorts. It's not "really" that they're rewarded for circumnavigating; the bonus merely reflects their emphasis on exploration.

Likewise, a civ that could build the sistine chapel is already emphasizing art and culture, and the wonder itself is simply a reward for or reflection of that.

Similarly, you could interpret the Great Wall not as a wall, per se, but as a philosophy of keeping out hostile outsiders (kinda like adding a "minor" protective trait to a civ). In other words, since the attitude of the civ is what's important here, the actual boundaries of the wall are irrelevent. After all, in real life, Spanish ships didn't literally go faster after Magellan nor does the sistine chapel literally increase the cultural/artistic worth of other buildings. And the Great Wall hardly marks off the boundaries of China.

Just a word of advice, don't use the word "CivFanatic" to describe yourself when posting here. Fanatic of Civ would be better. Also, to refresh your memory, Civ I came out in 91.

As said the effect does expand and the graphic doesn't. Although you can update the graphic in the worldbuilder.

Thanks for the responses. I waited until I had several cities before trying to build the GW and was always beaten out. Now that I know the effects expand with me, I will try to build it earlier.
