It would not actually always be a smart move. Spreading a corporation to a city where its competitor is present is more expensive. So, the AI might blow a lot of money if it tried to replace it.
By the way, if you spread a competing corporation to headquarters, then the new corporation will replace ALL branches of the first corporation worldwide. It's really expensive, though.
A strategy guide on how best to use corporations would be much appreciated. The manual aint much use!

I'm still at my first game (huge map, lots of civs) and I'm getting close to the end (1901 AD) and still haven't seen corporations. Nobody has had any chance building them yet, I'm one of the few who has the techs to build them, but I haven't gotten anything but great spies since I got those techsThis space is empty... or is it?

I think State Property is still better than corporations. The guys at Firaxis must be an underground socialist cell.

I'm not going to write a huge strategy guide, but some very important aspects of corporations are:
- COURTHOUSE in every city where you place a corporation
- Found EVERY corporation in your WALL STREET city to double the corp income! Make sure there's a BANK, MARKET and GROCERY as well in that city!
- Only found corporations of which you own many resources!
- Don't found competing corporations. (corporations that both use the same resource, ie. both Mining Inc. and Creative Constructions consume copper/iron)
- End all trade deals where you trade away resources you need for your corporation
- Trade in as many of your corporation goodies
- Spread your corporation to civs that don't have many of the corp resources, but not to civs that don't own any of those resources, since then the corporation won't have any effect (nor income for you)
- Spread the corporations first to the cities that benefit most from it
- Make sure that you've build every possible building that reduces maintenance! (Forbidden palace, courthouse, kremlin).
- Don't spread corporations to cities that barely need it or don't need it at all! That's a waste of money and income!
- Run Free Market (-25% corp maintenance costs) if you still have problems maintaining your corporations.
If you've done a good job reducing maintenance, and made sure that your corporations get a +200% income in the HQ city (thus 12 gpt per corp city) then you'll be able to manage your economy and benefit from the corporations.
Keep in mind that the more you benefit from a corporation, the higher the maintenance for that corporation is! Thus +8 hammers in a city, is more maintenance. It's up to you how much you want to pay to gain the benefits. You can always trade/give away goodies if the maintenance is too high for you.
It's impossible to have both +14 hammers in a city and not pay high maintenance for it. That's what makes it fun, CHOISES
Though the more you spread your corporations to foreign cities (you do get the +12gpt income, you don't pay maintenance) the easier it is to maintain your national corporations. But keep in mind that you must pay founding costs for corporations as well! (thus it may take you 8-20 turns to get the money back!)Formerly known as "CyberShy"

When you create a colony, do they have your exact technology level?
Colonies start out loving you, but some civs are backstabbers. What are the tendancies of a colony to backstab you?
