Or do I simply need to find a CD-ROM version of the game?
If the gamebox says DVD, then you need a dvd drive to install the game. Would be easier to just buy a dvd drive, you can find them pretty cheap these days. There's no reason to stick to using cd drives. Why go through all the hassle with changing cds during installation when you can just use one dvd instead of having 4 cds

Why don't you just buy a DVD-RW drive? Even though it may not be as cheap over there as it is here, if it's $35 in the USA, you SHOULD be able to get one there at an affordable price.

And yes, being here in the USA where they delayed the release really really sucks. For those who have the game on pre-order and are hearing how people in other countries have the game already, it really SEEMS they want to encourage illegal downloads by those who are forced to wait for our legal copies. They should have gone for releasing it on the same day everywhere.

EBGames/Gamestop has it set to ship today(July 23rd), so those of us in the USA at least should be able to get it tomorrow.

Did you buy a US version of Vanilla? I thought it came out on DVD over here as well.

ARRIVED. Now all I need is for everyone at work to stop needing me for things and get on with their own work happily.

          Damn...

So the manual was incorrect. I do need different hardware!!

What's more annoying is that there is no obvious difference between a CD and a DVD. It never occurred to me that the game would not work until I found that I had an empty disk. It was only when I noticed it said DVD that I realised that the drive might not be configured to read what was on the disk.

What I believe the manual means is that if Civ IV runs good on your computer, then the game would run just as good when BtS is installed. I believe the manual is the same no matter if it's the DVD or CD version you got

But yes, you will need different hardware to install it. The gamebox should also say that you will need a DVD drive to install the game

Anybody in North America get it yet?
("Yet" being Monday, July 23rd in the AM eastern time)

If so, please tell us where. I am hoping to cop a copy on my way home from work today.

My local EB reported this morning that they should have it tomorrow (but I know they're lying to me. They want to keep BtS as long as they can to themselves... just like JK Rowling and her durned wizard story).

Not here in Canada yet... well, in the Eastern Time Zone.

My EB told me tomorrow. I'm working then, so I have nothing to do on my day off today

I got a copy today at walmart... last night actually at around 3am (insomnia)..... It seems that some individual walmarts will put things out on the shelves as soon as they receive them. I got Burning Crusade a day early at walmart too....

And where might this Walmart be? The US is a big country... I might just live near the store you bought BTS... and if so, I might just want to shop there now.

How old is that machine that it didn't come with a DVD drive? Every computer sold in the USA in the past five years or so at least had a DVD reader, and every computer sold in the past three years have had at least a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive.

It must be very old. My first PC with a DVD-reader is around 7-8 years old now I think. And old PentiumIII 850 MHz. And just to make it clear, it wasn't more than an average good computer when I got it.

I've heard thousands of times that people could buy games in shops 2 days before the official release.

I rarely heard from people who got their pre-order like that.
Not here, in Brazil. They will translate the manual (usually pure crap) first... One month, maybe two... Who knows?
So, I’ve pre-ordered at CD Universe… Expected release date: July 25 (Amazon doesn’t let me buy it too, like many other companies…). Plus 5 days, or more, to shipping…

Direst2drive doesn't let me buy it. "This item is available only for USA, Canada, UK and Mexico residents” or something similar… Damn big companies and their stupid sales policies!!!
Is Direct2Drive the only company who sells it by download?

I think it has this but it doesn't like to read DVD's.

I can't quite figure out if this is something on the hardware settings.

Check in device manager and see if it says that it is a DVD drive. If it can't read a DVD, then it's a physical problem with the drive, or there is a firmware problem. In either case, you should be able to buy a new DVD-RW drive in Europe for a fairly cheap price(compared to the cost of a new computer).

Here in the USA, a DVD-RW drive costs $35 or so for an OEM drive, with a price of around $50 for a retail box. Even if things cost more in Europe(due to the VAT), it should be within your price range to buy one and replace your current drive.
