A couple of other things you can do, Shrapnel:

      1) Look to see if there is a 3rd civ on your continent, who still has Open Borders with Mr. X, and also has Open Borders with you. If this 3rd civ is not Jewish, send in missionaries to convert him. Once you convert him keep sending in missionaries, but instead of using them, gift them to him. He may use them to convert Mr. X back to Judiasm.

      2) Improve your relations with Mr. X until you have open borders. Then you can send in the missionaries to convert him.
-- Gift with random stuff. Money, resources, even a tech if you like.
-- Give Mr. X favorable trades.
      -- Don't refuse his demands.

Yeah, I've learned that the hard way. And especially on higher difficulties, you want a religion, for the happiness (temples) and monasteries for the increase to science.

I'm fairly sure there's an important point missing here. Blake could probably speak to it better than I; but the key to spreading religion is trade routes. I am fairly sure that religion spreads best when a city with a religion has a trade route with another city. (I don't think this is a requirement, but I am fairly sure it helps a LOT.)

Thus the best way to spread your religion, particularly to capitals, is to have as many trade routes as possible [so get Currency and Corporation early, build Castles, use Free Market, build the Great Lighthouse], and also to have as high priority on trade routes as possible to get foreign cities [if desired] (harbors, city size). Of course Open Borders helps a lot here.
