Thats true about civics but I'm finding that even with good relations Alexander can be easily bribed to attack you. In my most recent game, inspired by this thread I decided to go for having great relations with Alexander on the basis that he won't backstab me and that he would make a good trading partner/war ally. My problem though was that when I invaded another civ, that civ was able to pay him off to attack me with no problems and forced me to fight him. After breaking down his defenses and then fighting in alittle further to deprive him of his only oil so he would have no chance of being a threat in the future I declared peace. The problem though is that I'm now stuck as his worst enemy.

That's why you need "Friendly shield of immunity" - once you get to friendly they can't be bribed onto you, and wont decide to declare war on you. It is however possible for an AI to decide to declare war on you before friendly, they'll follow through even if they get to friendly in the meantime.
There's actually a goodly number of AI's which have "Pleased shield of immunity" - they wont attack at pleased. But they are typically bad warmongers and it also makes them harder to bribe (for instance you can never bribe them onto anyone they are pleased with).

Ahh, that explains some things then. I guess that brings me to a followup question. What would be an ideal number of allies in a game? I'm sure the number will change a bit depending on how many civs are in the game, the players ability vs difficulty level, and desired victory type but in general for a victory outside of a true diplomatic victory (a diplomatic win where you don't win the election by nuking the population of every opposing country) what would be a good rule of thumb? 1 ally for every 4 civs? 5 civs?

If you are small, militarily, you will be hard-pressed to find any friends at Noble and above, certainly not 15.
Alexander and Cyrus are trustworthy allies. Monty and Hattie will betray you if you get into the lead.
Anyone been able to ally with Isabella. She is always annoyed or worse in my games, even if you share her religion. No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

No, that's not how I feel about friends in real life.

I did it once. I got my religion to her and we had a couple resources we could trade. Also, we didn't share borders, so we didn't have that issue. We were great friends until it was time to invade her. It was a shame, really. She's obviously never forgiven me since. If you aren't confused,
