Try hardcore jaguar rushing. You need to make many fights at 30%ish odds, you will find that the odds are not so rigged as they seem to be. With the attitude that the units are disposable, you'll find that low odd fights actually work well. You'll also find the 5-6 exp gained per win to be quite useful, a jaguar can go from lvl1 to lvl3, or lvl2 to lvl4 in a single fight, so next fight it'll have significantly better odds.

      Speaking of "bad things happen":

I once lost a warlord at >99.9% chance of victory in his first fight.

Why not just use chariots, they have a knack for inflicting tons of damage even with 0% odds of winning. Gigantic fast chariot stacks are totally messed up, really hard to counter.

Just hit them with a larger stack of Axemen and spears.

Maybe it's the level you are playing at. At Monarch, I think the AI has a +5% on the dice roll. It's +20% at deity

Something else to keep in mind... if you're not playing with the patch, I think pre-patch the combat calculator didn't properly take into account first strikes. So, that 98% odds might not be.

Nah, pre-patch it was rounding issues. Don't know that first strikes are considered, even now.

Jags can get much better momentum going, because a Combat III Jag has very good odds. I consider chariots, except the War Chariot, to be a disposable attack force, you may lose 2/3rds of your chariots taking a city, but who cares if it's their capital so there's no more fighting to do afterwards?

That's basically the difference. Chariot rushing = good for one short war. Jag/Sword rushing = good for early conquest.

I plotted 1000 battles and they are certainly approaching the correct %.

The excel sheet shows my results. Now this was with vanilla, maybe I'll do it again with Warlords.

I was beginning to think that reading signature lines was a lost art.

And yes, my previous post was intended as irony. Good catch.

Out of about a few hundred 99.8%s, I've lost 7, about 10 times more losses then I should have. Generally other percents seem to be accurate though for me.

I never look at the odds. Just try to make good decision based on unit matchups, terrain, and unit bonuses.

Most of the time, the battle goes exactly as i would expect.

Often you can't trust the odds you see, as they sometimes shows the odds for the wrong battle. I have often seen the odds write that my granadier gets the +50% bonus against riflemen, but my granadier ends up fighting a machinegunner. So it shows that my chances for winning the fight is high, but in reality it's very low
