The one I didn't get at all on that list was why Age of Empires 2 got on it.... I didn't even think the game was even particularly good, and certainly nowhere near among the best of all time!

I remember playing that game less than a week, before it got repetitive, really formulaic, and boring, and haven't touched it since.

Baldur's Gate II rightly made the list, but I'd have ranked it much higher.

Really, though, I think a list like that is almost impossible to make in any fair way. Many of the games which I remember most fondly are from a time where the tecnological standards were such that they'd look really archaic for today's players.

It would've been nice to see Doom there, although I suppose it has really been made obsolete by newer games...Doom has the nostalgia value for me, although technically I consider the Half-Life series to have the best gameplay of the genre...

Well, it is a good list. I'd probably put Doom in just because it's the real granddaddy of FPS games, but I like the list. Half-Life 2 blew me away. Age of Empires 2 is an awesome RTS game. I didn't like Starcraft's gameplay as much as AoE2, but the great campaign makes it one of the best strategy games ever. With Deus Ex, my only regret is they don't really make games like that anymore. An excellent blending of genres, with a story deeper than you'll find in some RPGs.

Hmm... seeing as everybody likes AoE 2, I kinda got to doubting my memory - I may have gotten my wires crossed somehow in my gray matter. I looked up some screenshots of the game on the net, and it doesn't look at all like the game I associated with the name.

So it seems I've been avoiding the AoE games on a memory of some game that doesn't have anything to do with the series!

I wonder what the game was that I associated with AoE II? It was a really one-dimensional RTS, where essentially there was one simple strategy that would win every time, and really no good alternatives.

As lists of this kind go the IGN one is pretty good. But I have to agree with LS about the Sims.

I cannot believe a top-25 list was published without a Westwood Studios game. The Command and Conquer and Dune games revolutionized the RTS genre. The IGN writers must have been living under a rock throughout the early to mid 1990s.

Ever since Civ IV came out I've pretty much stopped playing Civ II. Because of that, XCOM is now the oldest game I play semi-regularly. Man it's good...

This list makes me want to find my copy of tie-fighter again.

However, the arrival of Doom began the avalanche of competitive online deathmatch FPS games, thus its long-term impact is greater than Wolfenstein 3D.

I didn't like AoE2, prefer AoE1 (RoR) or 3 (WC), or even Age of Mythology.

Early on when I was just beginning AoE1, I remember hearing this strange chant, wololo, coming out of nowhere, and all of a sudden I'd lose a unit! WTF?! I learned that priests convert units, and their range was longer than my LOS. So I learned to use chariot archers!

                                1. Master of Orion II
                                2. Civ4
                                3. Wasteland

Wasteland is a gem of a game... if you can get past the graphics. Played Fallout in hopes it would be the sequal everyone said it was. Not even close imo.
