It's unlikely that I will want to replay a game that I have played into the 17th century. For one thing, I know where all the resources are from the start. Even if I intend to avoid using this knowledge, it will be difficult not to.
It's still unclear what "path" you are proposing though. It's all very well saying build courthouses but to do that I need to research Mysticism, Meditation, Priesthood and Writing (if the Oracle is to pop COL). That path looks to be covered in danger when I'm surrounded by tundra and ice which are prime spawning grounds for barbarians.
What is also not clear is what I do with my production/population in this time too. If I take this path all I can build up till Writing are Stonehenge (or Monuments), Barracks, Warriors, Scouts, Workers and Settlers. And workers would have nothing to do but set up a camp for the two deer resources.
Then there is the commerce side of things. The reason that the tech rate was around 30% was not only because I had to pay for around 8/9 warriors and workers, but also because I had so little commerce to devote to covering either those costs or for techs.
Now it would certainly have been remiss of me not to have looked at ways of controlling costs AND increasing commerce. Courthouses were just one of those things that I rejected on the grounds that they took too long to acquire and gave very little return for my investment (ie increasing tech rate from 30% to 40%). I could do the same by working an extra water tile!!!
