Shiva, it's your fault that you can't appreciate one of the most excellent games ever released .

Sir Ralph - you're definitely not alone. Some other great civving minds, like Dale or myself , indeed believe that Warlords was okayish, but not great. It's worth nothing, though, that the general public response to Warlords has been good, even right here on Apolyton - frankly, it's been better than I had expected.

I voted for Civ 4. Not because it is the current version, despite people's claim that must be the reason. I actually like it. I like the 3D graphics. (Another heresy to some folk) I think the balance is more nuanced than civ 3. (Which I liked a lot. Even though that seems to be another unpopular statement.) I liked the Warlords expansion, (Although it was a little weak in content)

In fact, almost all of the reasons and preferences I have seen mocked are fully applicable to myself. And for the last heresy, I never played SMAC, and don't bring it up at every opportunity during a Civilization discussion.

I guess there must be something wrong with me, possibly several somethings. Does it count that I still love Civ and spend far too many hours creating yet another alternate world history? Should I care if it counts?
      If you aren't confused,

Voting for the most recent isn't always the case. IF you had done this pol right before civ IV came out, I bet civ II or Civ I would have been the leader with Civ III in dead last.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I'm far from slamming it like I slammed Conquests, and I also think it is "okayish", but I don't feel it actually improved Civ4, as in "made it better". It just made it different.

EDIT: As far as the public response at Apolyton goes, it was overwhelmingly positive much to my surprise and actually made me believe I was the only one thinking so.

Warlords made Civ4 slightly different, but I think it's for the better. More civs isn't bad. A couple of new units isn't bad, either but, most importantly, there are some AI improvements (post-patch mainly). So it's good as some extra flavour, IMO.

I agree, it would be better in the History forum. Most of the listed games are kind of history.

                  SR:

If it's history you're after, how about Interactive Magic's: Destiny. Now that's a historical Civ game. Came out just before Civ2, was fully 3D (terrain, buildings) you could "walk" through your Civ and plenty of other ground-breaking features....... all 10 years before its time.

The game failed of course, because it was too far ahead. As you can imagine, a game 10 years ago trying to do full 3D didn't look too pretty. Oh, and the gameplay SUCKED!

After hitting the button to open this thread I thought the same.... didn't know where else to post this poll.

The history forum would really have been the better choice because the result is not what I wanted to see (= Civ4 on Top ) Can't believe it somehow that Civ4 is the best Civilization ever played by the most Civilization'ers.

Thought that SMAC/Civ1-3 will lead the way. Have the feeling that many are really voting just because it's the recent civ ^^

Hope that Sid Meier decides to go for SMAC 2. There was a poll some months ago at firaxis's website... aren't there some news about a new SMAC 2? If Sid really decides to develop a SMAC 2 i hope he won't take the graphics from Civ4/Railroads!... because I dont wanna have to deal with "friendly and funny"-animated aliens like this:

                    same goes for the opponents!
it would destroy the atmosphere SMAC has... and more.

                    Greetings,
                    Cabal

SMAC ain't owned by Firaxis anymore. They'd have to shell out a fortune to be able to do it.

In other words, buy more civ4 + warlords!

If I could, I'd vote for more than one. Personally I've enjoyed the experiences of each game, even some of the more painful ones. Many new ideas and gameplay every time.

Im still enjoying CtP2 and feel its one of the best tbs game made.So it has my vote. But its because of the had work and many hours put into it by the modders(Stans Ages of Man among many great ones) which some are now working on Civ4.Also code updates have fixed many problems and have made it worth investing time in.
