Call To Power 2 Cradle 3+ mod in progress: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-games/call-to-power-2/ctp2-creation/9437883-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-apolyton-edition
Civ3? Nah, I vote the CTP2 is better than Civ3. Civ3 had a lot of flaws in it. These were obviously eliminated for Civ4 (which has a couple of its own flaws) but to me, CTP2 came the closest out of it and Civ3 to being an epic historical strategy game.
But Civ4 still owns them both by a mile. Maybe not Warlords (which didn't really add that much in the end) but Vanilla certainly does.
Well, at least Warlords doesn't make the game worse than vanilla. Although I maintain my opinion that it's a fairly average expansion (I even like the patch more than the expansion itself ), Civ4 is still better with Warlords than without, which, in the end, is good.

Hang on, it's actually the guy who votes Civ3 that needs to be lynched .
Do I? There's me thinking I had put reasoning behind it and not just voted for the current game that's out at the moment. Like all those polls TV shows and magazines have for the greatest music act of all time that features the 'flavour of the month'.
I had more fun playing Civ 3 so far after its release date than I have with Civ 4 this far into it.

I can understand your reasoning and even relate to it - I actually like Civ1 better than Civ2, although Civ2 is a better game. However, Civ1 gave me fewer annoyances and I generally have better gaming memories from it.

I mean, that bloke in post 14 even pans the game but still votes for it!
I acknowledged that it wasn't a perfect game, and in addition to that, I also acknowledged that the reason I voted for it wasn't because it was a "perfect game".
And further, I don't see why there is so much fan-fare for Civ IV. In another 10 years, if the franchise even exists, I am sure that there will not be any one to remember the "greatness" of the game and I am even more sure that there will be some new game to overshadow it purely because of the aforementioned fact. Guess what there, kimosabe, I liked a lot of the concepts and ideas behind Civ IV, III, & II and I thought they were good games in their own right, but to me, a "great" game is one which dares to leap off the beaten track and gives me something new for my 60$, not the same thing regurgitated to suite the tastes of contemporary gamers.

I think, on the contrary, that Civ4 will be remembered in 10 years. Civ1 was remembered 10 years after release - sure, everyone played Civ3 (or Civ2 or SMAC or CtP) then, but Civ1 was remembered as a great game. Civ4 has been praised and recognized as moving the franchise forward. In 10 years, hopefully we'll have an even better game, but that doesn't mean the veterans won't remember that Civ4 was a good step forward.

No, but who said now that it is? Civ4 is, presently, the best game in the genre, as many think. If it remains the best game 10 years from now, that would actually be a negative thing, meaning that the future games failed.

I think Morrissey has a point. Whenever there are polls referring to the greatest ever for this or that, respondents tend to disproportionately vote for the most recent or current. I think it has to do with either a lack of long term memory or not having been born yet, or both. Also, in the case of games, there's the fact that technology has improved since the earlier games came out.
If you compare the Civilization games to other games that were around at the time they came out, original Civ would rank much higher than it does in this poll. Possibly higher than Civ 4.
But if you are to place the games side-by-side, Civ 4 is the best, in my opinion.
